Does anyone know how to adjust shock cords?

Post by shewhodares » April 16th, 2012, 7:21 pm

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows how to adjust the shock cords? Can't find any instructions on this site or videos on you tube. Also, chain feels gritty...how would I remove chain, what would I clean it with and how the heck do I put back together again? LOL

Thanks!

And what exactly does the shock cord do?

The shock cords pull the chain/handle back to the front on the recovery of the stroke. Nothing more.

Cool, thanks - I didn't really understand how it interacted with the rest of the system.

At my gym last weekend the shock cord had been tightened significantly, it was literally pulling me back. I don't have that much experience and am wondering if this is normal?

Should pull about 6-8lbs. Any more than that and it'll be horribly uncomfortable for anything longer than 5 minutes.

I just rebuilt a Model B with a full set of parts from C2. Everything works great but I am concerned about the shock cord tension. I have the cord as loose as possible (meaning almost no extra cord after the stops) and I still have a tension of between 9-12 lbs. I suppose that the tension will loosen up a bit after a couple weeks? Is there anything I can do to stretch the cord a little?
Also, as a sidenote, would a too high shock cord tension cause you to be pulling a worse splits since the resistance is higher but this would not be calculated into the flywheel? Basically meaning you are doing the work to spin the wheel but also overcome a significantly higher shock cord resistance. I would think that for any longer pieces this could really add up!
