questions about dynamic erg's seat!

Post by cooperschwartz » January 13th, 2012, 4:29 am

when i row on my dynamic machine, the seat hits the stopper that is closest to the front. this is very disruptive and stops my sessions multiple times. it is very frustrating. i row how i would on a scull but the problem remains. how can i avoid/ change/ prevent this? :(

is my technique wrong? it doesnt seem to happen on the videos of the machine. and i feel like i have the right technique.
would it work if i made it so that the seat didnt move?
why does it move? (i figured that if the feet are stationary on a scull, it'd be backwards on this machine since the feet move. and the seat would not move. but i dont know! ) :|

thanks for the help! :D

I've no experience of the dynamic erg, so can't help directly, but it may be useful to post a video of your current technique to see if we can spot any problems.

Cheers, Paul

It's important that the machine is level or close to level so your seat travel is centered on the track. The front feet are adjustable to allow fine tuning. Sounds like you need to raise the front a bit. If you try imobilizing the seat you'll quickly see why it has to move some...... C2JonW

Hi,
I'm pretty certain that you are experiencing a similar issue that I had with my dynamic after about 200k meters of use. I called Concept 2 about it and they told me that the issue is a defective bungee cord that connects the seat to the rail. They sent me a new bungee and I haven't had these issues since. This small black bungee cord is very easy to replace and has completely fixed the problem. I hope that helps! Good luck

Same deal here. I wasn't hitting stops, but I did notice that the bungee had loosened up some. A quick call to C2 cleared it up and a new bungee was on its way. Two days later it was received and installed. Problem solved! I was told that the newer style bungee is now standard on all new dynamics.

On all the dynamic ergs, regardless of whether it's a C2, Oartec or Rowperfect, good technique requires only a few cm of seat movement in either direction, if the erg is level.

When I first started using the Rowperfect erg I relied on the seat bungee cord in preventing the seat from hitting the front stopper. However when my technique improved I was able to remove the bungee cord and row with very little seat movement. Nowadays if my seat ever hits the front stopper then it's only because I'm very fatigued or I'm having a really bad technique day.

Sit up, tuck your bum into your heels, concentrate on emphasis of using your legs, then you won't hit the front stopper.
PBs: 2K 6:13.4, 5K 16:32, 6K 19:55, 10K 33:49, 30min 8849m, 60min 17,309m
Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

On mine, the rubber core pulled out of the socket at the bottom, so the bungee was still fat at the top end and most of the way down. The last inch or so was thin, since it was just the fabric sheath with the core pulled out. There was still considerable tension in the bungee when the seat was moved all the way to either stop. The new bungee is mounted in a different way. It goes through holes in a pair of plastic right angle brackets and is knotted at the ends so that it won't pull out of the bracket. The other legs of the brackets have screw holes for mounting, using the same (Phillips head) screws that held the old bungee. I believe that C2 is working to come up with something better than that, but in the meantime the knotted bungees seem to be a practical solution.
