repairing a broken cord

One of the elastic cords that causes the handle to retract on my model C broke tonight. I can see that there is a very elaborate series of pulleys etc with all sorts of strange connectors and loops and stuff. I can also see that one of the other sections that didn't break is about to snap so I would like to replace all the cords. Item 1731 in the online store says "shock cord". Is that what I need, and are there several in the setup, or just one? I can't tell what condition everything else is in, but would I be better off buying the maintenance package and replacing the chain, pulleys etc? It is a pretty old model C but seems to be in pretty good shape otherwise.

Is it fairly easy to do this work if someone is reasonably mechanically inclined?

It's easy to replace with a new cord from Concept2. A broken cord can't be refitted it'll be too short.
