Looking for information on slide use....
I have been considering buying a set of slides for my model d. But before I went though with the purchase I was looking for some user feedback on them. Mostly with how they feel and how they affect your times on the erg. Just a little background on me and my erg. I purchased my erg in december and currently have about 1.6 million meters on it. For training I am currently following the "Pete plan". With the "Pete plan" I do a fast 5k every week and currently on my static erg I can achieve times between 19:00 and 19:08. And my fastest 2k is 7:03. Using slides how will it affect these times and steady state rowing as well????

How the times are affected depends on your skill and your weight.ryanjohn82 wrote:I have been considering buying a set of slides for my model d. My times were 3 to 5 seconds faster on the slides, identical for 10s sprints, 2s faster for 60s reps, 3-5 seconds for 2k, and increasing as the distance got longer. This was by keeping the same mps on the slides as the grounded erg.

I think the slides are a great option for the static C2 ergs. They require you to be pay more attention to good technique and posture to achieve good scores. On the slideless static ergs, it's possible to muscle your way through a session, pulling harder with the arms than with the legs, and still get a respectable score. And it you buy the marketing hype for the dynamic ergs, the slides reduce the risk of injury to the lower back.
Re: Looking for information on slide use....
I agree. I won't go back since I got mine. Yes they take room but they make the C2 so much better. My technique is much better and I don't have any back issues. I would not worry so much about your scores or times. You will get better on the slides and improve your technique. But keep in mind that competitions do not allow slides. So if you compete you may want to do some of your meters off slides.JRBJR wrote:I think the slides are a great option for the static C2 ergs. I'm very happy with my slides. Many report a more OTW-like experience. I'll just say I like my head staying more-or-less in the same position rather than jerking backward and forward with every stroke. Others speak of reduced likelihood of back injury. I'm good with that too.
What's not to like? Last year I was ranked among normal erg rowers and, yes, I guess I had a slight advantage in the rankings. This year I'm segregated in the Concept 2 rankings as a slide user. Typically either 1/1 or 1/2 or 2/2. Pretty meaningless.

Re: Looking for information on slide use....
Hello,
I am very happy with my slides.
Feels easier to row at a higher spm - maybe its an illusion and maybe not
There is various documentation and discussion available on the web regarding the mass and momentum of the erg on slides vs. the mass and momentum of yourself on a stationary slide and the corresponding wear and tear on your own body.
If you do a search on this forum on the word "dynamic" you will find some of that discussion.
Regards
Bill
