faulty batteries or faulty monitor?

I've resurrected my erg from the depths of my garage over the last few days only to discover that I am getting incorrect readings on the monitor. Time, stroke rate, pace are all incorrect and highly variable.

Where do I begin to look?

What model of PM is it ?

Did you store it with the batteries still in it ?

It's a PM3 and yes, the batteries were left in the monitor. The battery compartment appears OK.

And what model erg? On the PM3 go to main menu/more options/utilities/lcd contrast. Now press the change units button three times, then press the change display button three times. This will bring you to the SET ROWER TYPE page, where you can change the model rower the monitor is being used on. Your monitor may have defaulted to the incorrect setting during a prolonged shutdown. C2JonW

Hmmm ... I replaced the batteries, checked the rower type as per Jon, plugged it back into the erg (it's a C btw) and now there's no communication at all b/w the monitor and the erg. The display lights up fine but no stroke rate, pace, nadda
Any ideas?

I had the same problem at the beginning of June - it is most likely and issue with the pickup/tachometer. You'll need to order a new one from C2 and install it. That's what fixed my issue (after troubleshooting every other way).

That's what I'm beginning to wonder too; I neglected to mention in my original post that the monitor's non-performance has been a gradual regression rather than an abrupt ending. I thought that perhaps the pickup was just dirty but cleaning it didn't seem to help.

Usually if it gets bumped around real bad (I can pinpoint one such occasion with my erg) the pickup is either unseated or ruined... Or it just so happened my pickup died coincidentally at the same time as when my erg was getting roughed up.

It's sounding a lot like the pickup, particularly the gradual decline in function though it still might be the tach plug on the monitor. If you have access to another C erg you can narrow it down pretty quickly by swapping monitors and see where the problem goes. Otherwise I'd suggest trying a new pickup. C2JonW
