Best chain oil?

Post by pdauby » June 16th, 2009, 1:49 pm

I just got a model D rowing Machine. The machine is just under 2 years old but has essentially never been used (25 times at most). The seller didn't have the oil that Concept2 gives with the unit so I need to purchase some. I am wondering - is there a "best" oil to use for the chain? IE, what about synthetic oils like the Park Tool CL-1 Synthetic Blend Chain Lube Bottle that is sold on amazon? Any benefit to using stuff like that?

I'm not an expert in these matters but I'd use any household oil that isn't intended for use in the *** DELETE - SPAM ***. :)

Best oil is the C2 mineral chain oil.

If you don't have that then a 20W light oil like 3-in-1 or a specialist bike chain lube will work as a good substitute.

Dougie is mostly right, though I would steer clear of "specialist bike chain lube" since many of these are little more than a solvent with minimal lubricating capabilities. Tests that I conducted many years ago in the area of chain wear were very conclusive- 20 weight oil outperformed most other lubes by at least ten to one on the chain we use. The primary advantage of our (20 weight) mineral oil over off-the-shelf 20 weight oil is that it is odorless and colorless......C2JonW- concept2 engineering staff
