Self-retrofit PM2 onto Model B?

Post by haus » December 10th, 2008, 11:53 pm

I did a search and didn't find anything; forgive me if this has been asked and answered.

We have two ergs in our family, a model B and a model C. I upgraded my PM2 on the C to a PM3 to use RowPro. I'd like to give my parents the used PM2 for their B (which has a PM1 right now), and it looks like it's a simple bolt-on replacement. But I've heard that putting the "wrong" monitor on the "wrong" erg without setting something properly on the monitor results in incorrect readings. I read something about people taking a PM3 that was "set" for a model C and using it on a model D basically results in a form of sandbagging. Not that my parents are competitive rowers, but I also want them to have a well-functioning model B, even if it is a bit of a relic. Is anyone aware of any issues with just replacing the PM1 with the PM2 and calling it a day?

I did find this thread on the UK forums that seems to indicate it's a bolt-on replacement:

You can bolt it on.

I put mine on a 1x3" length of wood that was bolted to the side.

There are no conflicts between the pm1 and 2 connections.

Wow, thank you for the fast and detailed response, John! Good to know it can be made to work; my PM2 was collecting dust since I upgraded for RowPro functionality.

Your PM2 should work fine on the B. C2 sells a retrofit bracket to attach a PM2,3 or 4 to a Model B. It's part number 610 and sells for $14. It places the monitor at about the same location as the PM1, unlike Johns wooden bracket.....C2JonW
