Re: observed (semi) interesting stats
It's more the time 3s for r20 1.5s for r40 - and I know I don't spend the same time pushing as in recovery so it implies that I've got the timing ratios about right. Aren't those 'sec per stroke' stats just 60/(Stroke rate)? In other words, just a different way of expressing stroke rate, without sa...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
First serious 2k for me, 7:10.6. Quite happy about it though went out too hard on the first 500 (not surprising!). Will have to shoot for sub-7 after another month of rowing. Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M 7:10.6 2,000 1:47.6 281 1265 26 171 1:44.9 500 1:44.9 303 1343 29 170 1:47.5 1,000 1:47.5 2...

Re: Aerobic base training metric: meters-per-beat
That's an interesting metric. I suspect that it favors being really low in Z2 or even in Z1, because speed goes as the cube root of power and power output is typically something like linear in HR-HR_resting. In fact, if you do the calculus for: speed ~ (P)^(1/3) ~ (HR-HR_resting)^(1/3) then you get ...

Re: Critique my stroke / rate question
Thanks everyone for the feedback! Plenty of things to work on :) I think in addition to sit position / pelvis rotation, that being mindful about lat engagement and keeping shoulders back rather than hunched forward throughout the stroke and especially not hunching forward towards the catch will help...

Critique my stroke / rate question
Have had the erg now for a week and a half, recorded a video of my stroke today. https://youtu.be/nabeu15SxtA This is ~170 W at rate ~19, would be moderate-high aerobic effort if sustained (did 12k at 162W at 18 s/m). Looks to me like some problems are: 1) I'm bending arms too early (I think I know ...

Splitting wood and rowing
Noobie here but thought I'd chime in with an early observation. IMO there is quite a bit of transfer between splitting firewood (with a maul, aka splitting axe) and rowing. (I spent a few tens of hours splitting wood this past winter, generally go through 2-3 cords of firewood a year) Wood-splitting...

Re: How to improve watts/distance and stay within heart rate......
Have you tried the reverse pick drill or pick drill to break down your stroke and see where your power is coming from? Whats this? No idea what you are talking about. They are stroke mechanics isolation drills. Switch the PM to show power and your force curve as you're doing them if you want to get...

Re: How to improve watts/distance and stay within heart rate......
Have you tried the reverse pick drill or pick drill to break down your stroke and see where your power is coming from? What power/pace can you sustainably row with legs or legs/hip swing only? And what can you do in a sustained pick drill for different parts of the stroke -- i.e., arms-only, hip swi...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Just got a Concept 2 last week, distance running / some cycling background. Hammered a 10k today, thought I might be going out way too hard but it was the first workout I was doing with a functioning HR strap so I could see I was in threshold range based on HR and used that for reassurance. First 2k...

Training advice for runner new to erging?
Hi all -- new member here! I'm a 40 year old guy (180cm, 74 kg), with a good distance running (8 marathons 2:42-2:59 in the last 7 years) and also a little cycling background (a few triathlons, bike commuting, current FTP ~270W). Just got a concept 2 rower, and am interested in any advice / training...
