Re: Row / Erg in morning vs evening performance
I think the only real answer to be had here is that everyone is different. I personally can't stand exercising first thing in the morning, my preference is to do it around lunchtime - if I get up at 6:30-7:00AM, my ideal workout window is around 11:30-1:00PM. Then again, I am 100% not a "morning per...

Re: Some questions about longer distances
I won't say that others aren't drinking enough or aren't properly hydrated because that can vary a lot by individual. What I can say is that I've usually drank at least 64-96 ounces of straight water by the time I row at night, plus whatever I got from food and coffee etc., and I still prefer to sto...

Re: Some questions about longer distances
I don't have anything meaningful to add but I will say I'm surprised at how long you all row without stopping to drink. For me, anything over ~5-6km requires at least a squirt of water or my mouth starts to feel so dry and sticky that it becomes a distraction. Admittedly I'm used to drinking frequen...

Re: DF all over the shop?
Mine has been fluctuating quite a bit as well, too, 5-10 points per day, with one day spiking up to 165, and another day ErgData recording no value whatsoever.

Re: Cross training for squash with Pete's 5k (lite)
Nice post, OP. Like you, I started erging as cross training for another sport (ice hockey, also at an intermediate level) and have been looking for a training plan. I hadn't given the 5K plan much thought but this thread has me reconsidering. Can you elaborate a bit on how you feel the 5K plan help...

Re: Aging & Drag Factor
Mine trended down over the years, eventually falling into the recommended 110 to 130 band. For an all out sprint like 100M or 500M you need something higher but pretty much everything else is a lighter pull. Can you expand on why a higher drag factor is needed or helpful for sprints? When I started...

Re: Noob question - what shoes do you wear to erg?
I don’t usually wear shoes to erg. Or socks. (Or strap my feet in, but you didn’t ask about that.) I probably would if I was training in a public gym or something but since it’s just me in my basement, I figure why bother with shoes? I tried going barefoot and socks only and hated it even before th...

Noob question - what shoes do you wear to erg?
I've been erging for a few months now and this week I switched from wearing my old running shoes (~10mm heel drop) to Reebok Nano training shoes (4mm heel drop, much less cushioned) and I swear my SS splits improved by 5 seconds with no change in effort. Rowing in the Nanos also makes it feel like m...

Re: Fan recommendations?
I had to reconfigure my space a bit and repurpose a wastebasket for the fan to sit on, but setting the fan up behind me was the way to go. Good tip!

Re: Fan recommendations?
I bought a couple of Vornado fans at Costco a while back and put one on each side. Keeps me plenty cool. I just bought one of these yesterday and used it today. It definitely kept me cool but even on the middle setting it dried out my mouth and eyes, so I'll have to experiment with where to put it ...

Re: Pondering the Beginner Pete Plan
Hi all - new guy (39M, 5'10"/215lbs, new to erging) here. I've been rowing 4-5 days per week for about 2 months now and I'd like to start the BPP, but I don't where to start in terms of pacing. My primary goal is to improve my overall fitness. So far, 90% of my workouts are steady state, with the ot...
