Hi, it's the teetotaller here! New HM PB this morning - 1:38:49.5 (35 second improvement). Over the moon!
Great work, see the teetotaling is paying off already :)

Re: Alcohol and erging/training

The responses to this post have been tremendous - many thanks to you all. As someone who suffers from anxiety, I've found that a drink certainly 'takes the edge off', and has been more effective in that regard than the antidepressants I've taken in the past. However, the positive effect only lasts ...

Re: Alcohol and erging/training

I agree that people should never feel pressured into drinking and that for some stopping completely is the only solution. I just think that equating drinking with smoking is pushing the point too far and people should be allowed to drink in moderation if they wish. Smoking is worse than drinking, b...

Re: Alcohol and erging/training

Just my opinion, but one key point is: I absolutely don't drink it for its effects, I drink it because (and only if) it tastes good. To me, if you "drink to get (even lightly) drunk", you're on a slippery slope. This is the difference between drinkers like you and drinkers like me. I absolutely dri...

Re: Alcohol and erging/training

I grew up in an alcohol heavy environment and for most of my life it was a huge crutch. I drank 5+ nights a week, even when relatively fit from rowing. On at least 2 nights a week, I drank to excess. On 1-2 nights a month, I drank to vast excess. For sure I was a "high functioning" alcoholic. Then ...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

That’s the thing - you didn’t misread or mistype or anything. You read the OP’s OP correctly bro. It didn’t sound rough at all. Don’t sweat it - save that for the erg. I agree completely, he understood my comments and gave great and encouraging advice as he always does. Nothing offensive or trigger...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

The craziness in form has to be seen to believed. I've never seen so much chain slapping from violent up and down movements of the handle ever. But the idea of not doing short intervals is really counterproductive. Interval training is well established in all endurance activities. I've used shorter...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

I think I'm in the same camp: I need some level of disgustingness to prepare for a 2K. I've recently done a 8x500m+3R averaging 2KP - 4s: my 2KP is a bit old, but I'm not even sure I can actually repeat it right now so I'm not confident this predicts my current 2KP. I've also done a 4x1K+6R at my 2...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

3:18 for me. I probably have relatively more power than stamina. It's interesting that in spite of your 1k being significantly faster than mine, our 5ks are about the same and my 30min is faster. As other have said, the 2k is a unique blend of aerobic capacity and strength. I guess it's possible to...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

Adding my two cents for the OP's pursuit of sub-7. First, the OP's 1- 2 - 5 - 10K times are consistent. Pace: 143.1, 1:47.5, 1:52.6, 7 1:56.8. Nothing jumps out as too slow or fast. Two things are needed. One: You have to get comfortable pulling out of your comfort zone. Doing 1:41.x for 1K is not ...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

Sub7 is a real test but is definitely possible. My mate Rod Stewart is about 70kg and did it at 70y more than once - although he was right at the top of his game - he was the first 70+ lwt. A 70 year old LW achieving sub 7 is very impressive. If you look at LWs across all ages, the 90th percentile ...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

I am still new to all this so might be wrong, I just feel that works for me. That works for everyone, as this relates directly to the main target. If your main work is at target pace or faster, the adaptation of the physiological properties is done to exactly fulfill the needs for it. This totally ...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

I'd probably aim for + 6/7 for the first one and then gauge how it feels. You want it to be a notable but not really tough, as you're aiming to maintain the same pace for three more and then give it everything on the last. Managing the mind games when you see still four figures left to go can be va...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

Are you training to be a bodybuilder, a rower, or general health? There is a massive difference in training stimuli between 5 reps and 15 reps. I would be seriously questioning level of intensity at 27 sets. Well established bodybuilding programs will incorporate one, maybe two all out sets on a gi...

Re: 1k pace for a 7min 2K?

You have not specified anything about intensity, so I have no idea of it. 27 sets could be fine at lower intensities, but on high intensity probably not. It all depends on your capabilities and strength you already built. My approach looks quite different, as I tend to react better on more frequent...
