Re: Zone 2/UTC2 training and first few minutes
I'm using the advice I have read in many places that when in zone 2 I should be able to breathe through my nose, or hold a conversation. For example: I start rowing and target a pace of 2:40 as I know this will get my HR up but not be too much. After 5 or 10 minutes my HR is at about 100 bpm and so...

Re: Is this zone 2 ?
Have you tried this calculator? https://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/app.php/page/heart-rate-bands-calculator I'm not really sure what you mean with Zone 2 but an average HR of 153 and above would be in the upper range of UT1 in my HR zones. That calculator is surely wrong? For example, it gives...

Re: Zone 2/UTC2 training and first few minutes
The thing I'm struggling with, with this zone 2 stuff, is my heart rate isn't really getting into zone 2 until quite a long time after starting, because I dial back my effort due to my breathing suggesting I am going too hard. I'm using the advice I have read in many places that when in zone 2 I sho...

Zone 2/UTC2 training and first few minutes
When I start a row where I am planning to spend the whole time in heart rate zone 2 (60-70%) it takes a lot of harder rowing to initially get my HR up into that zone. Just wondering if it is correct to do that- row hard straight off the bat to get into the desired HR zone as quickly as possible? (I ...

Re: Lack of info on ut1, ut2 zones
We do use UT1, UT2, AT, TR and AN and they have clearly defined bands. http://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/app.php/page/heart-rate-bands-calculator That link doesn't explain why those definitions (UT1 etc) get used in rowing articles, rather than the standard heart rate zones 1, 2, 3 etc. It als...

Re: Why not row 5k to improve 5k?
... if I was to take the approach of doing say 2 x 2500m intervals at 95% effort, how would you suggest to gauge that 95% effort? Perhaps by reducing my personal best 5k 500m pace by 5% and setting the pace boat to that for the intervals? Try RPE (perceived effort) rather than any objective measure...

Re: Why not row 5k to improve 5k?
Thank you Tsnor (and others) for an informative answer. Just to clarify, you interpreted my question correctly -- my intention was to keep the multiple long light/moderate heart rate rows per week and do one 5k time trial per week instead of interval work. However, what you say makes sense that tryi...

Lack of info on ut1, ut2 zones
I've been reading about training, and all the articles refer to UT1, UT2 etc training zones, but not a single one has any explanation of what they mean! I've searched online and been unable to find a single article that explains them (with a nice table perhaps) except a reddit thread that had a litt...

Why not row 5k to improve 5k?
I've been reading about all the various ways to improve a 5k time, and they all seem to suggest a similar approach to lots of long rows at a moderate heart rate intensity, with one interval training session a week, such as 2 x 2500m building to 2 x 3000m building to 2 x 3500m and so on. I understand...
