Seating of my hands

I picked up sculling as a newbie a couple of seasons ago. I row 3 times a week, by choice primarily as part of a quad because I enjoy working together as a team in the boat. I have developed at least one flaw in my stroke that I believe is contributing to the quad pulling to port. In an effort to co...

Re: Aging & Drag Factor

There is no specific answer. I know of someone who rows everything at circa 220, and he is exceptionally fast too, but the accepted wisdom is to aim for 110-130. Yo complicate things more, you might like to use a lower drag for longer distances and higher drag for shorter distances, and it's 99% ce...

Re: Aging & Drag Factor

The four basic rowing styles are Adam, DDR, Rosenberg, and Grinko with greater or lesser emphasis on legs or trunk and on consequent or simultaneous movement. Where does the Conibear style fit admidst those four? Two questions: 1.) If a relative newbie wanted to read up on these four rowing styles,...

Re: Is my coach's Training Plan too cruel?

What about looking at it from a different perspective: Your coach actually gives a sheet and is prodding and pushing you and your teammates to accomplish beyond what you've convinced yourselves are your limits. "Walk-on's from other sports" my arse - don't allow yourself buy into that crap. You and...

Re: Model C slipping Clutch

With a fast, explosive drive and a decent one way the clutch will engage within a few inches at the start of the drive. The one way or clutch bearing should engage the moment the the shaft rpms exceeds the fan rpms. As the fan starts decelerating at the end of the drive, the rate at which depends o...

Re: Open Water Boats for sale

Thank you again for your advice and help. Earlier this month I picked up a pre-owned Zephyr as my first shell and am having a blast with it. If all goes as planned, next summer I'll be back on this forum asking for advice and recommendations on a racing shell that will accommodate someone my size.

Re: Open Water Boats for sale

Yes, thanks. I have been following that FB group along with Row2k and Adirondack, as well as scanning Craigslist nationwide. A number of the manufacturers on their websites list pre-owned boats for sale. Something will eventually turn up.

Re: Open Water Boats for sale

PaulG, thank you. I've visited back and forth with Mr. Milde, really good guy. He believes a Zephyr will work for a guy my height and size. Mr. Milde's observations match my experience - pre-owned Zephyr's aren't easy to find. Craftsbury has a number of non-Zephyr Peintert's for sale, but they are h...

Open Water Boat for Clydesdales?

I am a newbie to sculling. I practice with the local rowing club in a four-person shell, and I'm looking to purchase my own single. 6' 7" and 290-ish means a racing shell 1X isn't an option for me. I have been looking at pre-owned open water shells, but not really interested in whitehalls or wherrie...

Re: Proper Foot Stretcher Position, Footplate Height and Angle

If you are considerably taller, then perhaps you'll have to modify your stroke to match your shorter crewmates. Maybe the coach can adjust the rigging or oar length to help. As a newbie to sculling, you caught my eye with this. I joined a masters rowing club within the past six months and I'm consi...
