Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Thanks for the support. Another quick update. So fortunately I've had a good run on the health front of late! Back is good as well. Strength - deadlift is close to my 2022 max (which is also my all time max). Squat is above my 2022 max. Rows - mixing it up still, comparing my figures to last year sh...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Just popping in for a quick update. I appreciate all the concerns about the back :) The back is a lot better now. A bunch of osteopath sessions + regular hip mobility drills have helped. I have been doing 1 session a week on the erg - mixing it up. I was quite down when I realised how far my numbers...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Thanks for all the feedback. Good points - I will take it slow. And I'm going to double down on my mobility/stretching work + book in regular (weekly?) osteo appointments. If I get that sharp pain when training I'll pull the pin (and do sprints on the wattbike for instance). I did some heavier squat...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Hi All. Just a quick update in case people see this thread and wonder what has happened!! Well my back injury was pretty bad. I took 3 months off the erg. 2 months off lifting. And multiple oesto/physio sessions. Day to day it feels better but I know structurally i'm not quite right. Some movements ...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Thanks for all the comments and support team! Much appreciated. The goal remains. I still firmly believe that I am capable of a 1:14.2 - it's a 8% improvement from my current best. With a solid training spell, and a row where everything just goes to plan, I will get it. Time is against me though - I...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Kids are 1 and 3 (soon to be 4). So it looks like I have a lot of illness ahead of me!! Hey I thought I'd just update this thread before the break. In all honesty I haven't been the best lately - physically and mentally. Pretty much since the Oceania's I think I've only had 1 good session on the erg...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
If anyone is interested, I recorded a 90% effort 500m from multiple camera angles for my physio (working with a new guy to help correct some imbalances etc). You can see it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tueO8WDCoCE In other news, the cold turned out to be more than annoying - ended up with ...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Pace data is now available to view here - https://regatta.time-team.nl/oirc/2022/erg/rd8625b1a-bfb0-4b5e-92ae-419d79e13f83.php You can see a 1.5 second delay before first stroke is complete. Typical home erg data does not include fractional seconds, so we can't see how much longer that is then typi...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Thanks for all the feedback team! @Dangerscouse Tapering - yeah it was a first for me. I think it's wise to cut back on heavy lifting prior to the event, as some weeks I need a full week to recover from the gym session alone. But maybe I can see do some short sprints in the lead up. IDK. I guess I'l...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement. @BTLifter - ok thanks for sharing this. It does make me feel better haha. Though I have moved on from the result. And yes I can say now that a virtual race is not the best way to achieve a PB. Here are all the reasons why this is the case: 1) the re...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
really dispiriting and just made me question the whole thing to be honest. I love the training and aspiring to be quick and good etc but if it's going to be stressful and going to cause me anxiety in the lead up and then distress/disappointment and a little shame afterwards, then what's the bloody ...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Well a disappointing result. I pulled another 1:16.2 You can see the race here - https://youtu.be/Ujllr4hguFc?t=16948 I think this was a 2nd place for the Oceania Champs, and I think it was a 1st for the NZ champs (as it was a joint event), but official results aren't out. But I went into this race ...

Re: Training To Break 1:14 - 500m
Nick, you're on the money. 500m events are in the afternoon. Schedule is up here - https://airc.rowingaustralia.com.au/oceania-indoor-rowing-champs-2022 130pm Aussie time for my event (race 24 - Mens 30-39 500m). So that makes it 3:30pm in the afternoon NZT. Which is pretty much perfect - I train ar...
