Does the paid version of ErgZone have the data that you're looking for?

Re: Thoughts on BRIC 2024

Survey link: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/8114634/British-Rowing-Indoor-Championships-2024 Most of the competitions that I have been to haven't had showers, changing rooms, or cooldown ergs, although I wouldn't say no to any of those! Overall, it was very well organized, and I really appreciate th...

Re: Steady state pacing

My typical "steady state" is at 50% of 2k watts, and occasionally slower if there are other factors (like adjusting to heat). About once a week, I will have a steady session that Stu would call UT1/gray zone and my sweep coach would call hard steady state, where I'm more like 60-62% of 2k watts. If ...

Re: Indoor events

It's the wrong time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It seems as though when the weather is good to row on the water, there are water regattas. When it gets cold and people move to indoor training, there are indoor races. I would expect for information to be published closer to the race dates.

Re: Layback help

I've never looked at the stroke length metric, but if you're simply looking at the athlete, I would expect a shorter stroke when sprinting. Phil Clapp recently posted video of his 500m world record that would be a good watch (IG bigphil90, and also on Youtube under Cameron Buchan's account). The ke...

Re: Layback help

Sprinting for me seems to be completely different. I find that when I try to increase my power significantly I tend to start lengthening my stroke as well. Is this normal? I assume it's not desirable to have different stroke lengths for sprints at the end. Or maybe it only matters if you're on a bo...

Re: How is my Form?

Solid. Body angles and sequencing are both good. You're delaying body in the drive, which will effectively use your legs, and you set your body position during body over on the recovery and then don't move it going into the catch. Shins are a good angle at the catch. I actually don't have any recomm...

Re: Strength training for rowing

What does a typical week look like for you right now? I'm about to hit deadlifts and squats in the same session, and earlier this week did intervals the day after a full-body strength session, but I've built up to the volume/intensity over time and know it works for me. I'd personally add pulls to t...

Re: P/AR all-time 2k leaderboard

It's going to be really hard to get widespread buy-in for a ranking system that places Rich Cureton above Josh Dunkley-Smith. In essence, P/AR scoring yields a 'healthy ageing ranking'. As such it is intended for athletes who are well 'over the hill'. Athletes in their early thirties or younger are...

Re: P/AR all-time 2k leaderboard

Slides continue to provide an advantage for longer pieces, just not as marked as the advantage for sprints. The slower records are a matter of a smaller pool as well as fewer people taking them seriously. It's going to be really hard to get widespread buy-in for a ranking system that places Rich Cur...

Re: Can you row with one leg, and what are the tricks to doing it right?

I've heard people recommend the skateboard trick, but I find that it starts to shift positioning pretty quickly and then I keep having to readjust. I also worry about picking up bad habits with that. I have had okay success with partial slide rowing, but that depends on what your knee problem is and...

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

I guess my general query is whether folk think there would be value in a bit more middle distance speed work, ease off the lifting for the next month or so, then get some proper rest in the lead up? Reckon I’d have a shot at sub 3? Speaking for me personally, I would make sure that sleep and nutrit...

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

Thanks Cam, and congratulations back at ya! Also, Rob, incredibly well fought! Blimey - that is nuts fast for 100k with just two of them. What was their changeover strategy ?? Clearly not the 20 strokes each of the large team stuff. For the most part, we did Andy 550m then me 450m. We had a couple o...

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

There is training and there is competing, and sometimes the two necessitate a different approach. I don't like that chart that associates heart rate zones with things like SPM and sweat level; they're not necessarily linked. Glenn also makes great points about otw vs erg. I like... Steady state at r...

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

One interesting observation from the HM is that my heart rate was north of 170 for about 45 min and north of 160 for an hour or more. I don't know how to reconcile this with training zones. My max HR is only just north of 180 (I hit 182 all out at the end of this HM, for instance) so 170+ should be...
