The other benchmark we had was a 2x20' erg, all out, open rate, with 20 minutes active recovery on a spin bike in between. Our whole varsity eight my senior year (and me, toiling away in the JV...) averaged sub-1:40 pace for both 20' pieces. Don't think I'll be giving either of those workouts a try...
