You scour the internet seeking a pill box that can be attached to your PM5.

Re: Hello from NY - New Rower Here

Welcome.

I was born in Brooklyn and spent 5 years of my adult life in Rochester.

Keep up the good work.

Re: Complementary exercises for rowing

I've only been rowing for a bit more than two years, but when the weather is conducive, I do a combination of 2 or 3 indoor rows a week and another 2 on the water. Once winter arrives, I'll spend more time on the indoor rower. I find Pilates to be a good complement to the rowing and usually attend c...

Re: Secrets of Consistency?

It helps me to consider what else I'm going to do while I'm rowing. I usually row in the afternoon right after I get home from work, so I most often decide that morning what workout I'm going to do (5k / 10k / 30min / 60min / slow / fast) and if I'm going to listen to music, listen to a podcast, aud...

Re: Grip it and Rip it

My routine is similar in that I usually try to stick with the fastest pace I think will get me to the finish while maintaining a constant stroke rate. Depending on how I feel in the 1st minute, I like to pick a pace slightly faster than last time. The finish is typically 5k, 10k, 30min, 60min, half ...

Re: Heart rate limiting

Prior to starting this discussion, I was thinking that I would use stroke force to adjust pace while keeping stroke rate constant,

I will experiment using both approaches.

It's been interesting to read other's thoughts on this. Thanks to all who shared.

Re: Heart rate limiting

Thank you. I'm wondering what the best course is for maintaining HR during a single workout. Using a 10k as an example and hoping to keep HR under 140, I'd probably start out at about a 2:15 pace given my history. My assumption was that, if I see my HR moving above 140, lowering my pace would be abs...

Heart rate limiting

Up until now, I always aim to maintain a constant pace during ALL my rowing workouts except at the very end where I like to turn it up a notch or two, and it seems as if my heart rate never plateaus during the steady state. I'd like to do some experimentation to see if I can keep the same distance (...

Re: Novice Questions

Side note: I've heard you're not really supposed to use the foot straps to pull yourself back down the rail. Why? Don't you lose speed by easing back slowly? Welcome! Each stroke consists of four phases. Drive / finish / recovery / catch. For me, the most important aspect of maintaining proper form...

Re: Only training on the indoor rower

Gravity modification may be better than weights. If that is not an option, weights seem to be the clear choice for muscle building. I'm not particularly interested in building more muscle mass. My main goals are maintaining what I've got and bettering my cardiovascular system. Before discovering Pil...

Re: First 5k - help with race plan/goals

My best 2k is 8:05.5 and my best 5k is 20:54.6.

I've done quite a few 5ks and only 3 or 4 2ks, so I may be capable of an 8:00 2k. So, for me my 5k pace is ~5 seconds more than my 2k pace.

I think a good goal for you would be to maintain a pace of ~2:12.

Re: Drive Ratio

I inquired about drive length some time ago.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=204169

It's something I use to monitor my form. I'm going to add drive ratio to my readout and see if it is a useful parameter.

Re: Your music legends

In the 10's and 20's, Jazz took hold and I listen to that more than anything else. I lean towards the improvisational stuff especially piano and bass centered material. I love how different we all are, as improvisational jazz is one of the few types of music I can't enjoy. I like my jazz to be more...

Oops. I got my decades confused. Dave Matthews came on the scene in the mid 90s. I just watched a recording of the Letterman performance. SO GOOD!

Re: Your music legends

I've never been into specific tracks and tend to gravitate to the less popularized tunes, so I'm going to stick with the artists that inspired me. In the 70's, Led Zeppelin was it, although my very 1st album was Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell. I got a new stereo system when I was 13, I was at the store ...
