Re: Ruck rowing

I haven't done this and don't intend to. Having said that, I can imagine a potential use case - somebody training for a rucking event, but who is limited in the amount of actual rucking they can do. For this hypothetical person, I can see some potential sport-specific adaptations (some respiratory, ...

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

I have come to the view some while back, that = we are not training to row a particular distance per se, but training our bodies to row for long periods of time. Whilst this may seem a bit pedantic because our targets are usually a defined distance, this concept becomes clearer when one thinks of u...

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

Cheers, everybody. Strategy for rest/pacing/nutrition was: First 3 hours at sub 2:00, no breaks and just gradually drinking electrolytes and snacking throughout. Thereafter, minimize breaks (I peed just once) while eating/drinking as much as I could without having to pee more or upsetting my stomach...

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

I had a go at an ultra-row, myself yesterday.

I managed 12 hours, and just a touch under 169km (avg. pace of 2:07.9).

Had hoped to maybe target the 24hr WR. But, knew 2 hours in the was out the window and just tried to hold on as long as possible.

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

Quick shoutout to 'Elizabeth' (Gilmore) and Andy Tomlinson for destroying the tandem, mixed, 100k world record, yesterday.

Finished it in well under 6 hours.

Avg pace of about 1:45.8.

Bonkers.

Re: Is Zone 2 training really possible on Rower?

I find that I cannot maintain "Zone 2" at even R18, so do them at R16-17. The important thing for your stroke is that you achieve the lower rating by slowing the recovery. Feels really slow to start with, but can now maintain R13 if I wish (although rarely go below R15, no purpose). Meanwhile, I ha...

It certainly does. Would you mind sharing approximate numbers for reference? I know you have an elite 2k - what’s your “weak stroke” steady state, 2k+x?
My 2k was apprxox. 490w (fit, tho definitely not 'elite'). Steady state is most typically 210w at r22/3.

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

Great point guys. My fear with rowing slow at higher SR is that it will weaken my stroke power. I guess you can't train everything at once... Maybe some of the confusion comes from the Free Spirts heart rate band calculator? That actually gives sample SR for each band and gets higher as the bands g...

Re: Is Zone 2 training really possible on Rower?

I've been having the same problem. Going as slow as I can, at rate 20, puts my heart rate in the 150's. It can be difficult to be honest with one's self. You were surely not going as slow as you can. Having said that, sometimes folks don't have requisite fitness levels to facilitate performing a "l...

Re: Is Meters/Stroke a Useful Metric?

Goodhart's Law seems appropriate here (and, in a lot of dimensions of erging performance): "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure." I think there's a subtle difference in this instance. It's a target, but a loose target predicated on improving the technique. When it's reac...

Re: Zone 2 Training - does it have to be the Erg?

Back when I was sprinting, my low intensity exercise was almost exclusively on the bike. This served me pretty well for 500 and below. But, as 'short' as 1k, I noticed benefited from rowerg-specific-low-intensity. Having said that, the exercise you can and will do is much better than the exercise th...

Re: Is Meters/Stroke a Useful Metric?

Interesting responses. Thanks. When I first started, I was only around 6m/stroke. Based on advice received on this forum, I took a video of myself and saw my form needed some serious improvement, mainly at the end of the pull where my body was only at 12 o'clock. This surprised me greatly...I thoug...

Re: How to get better on the erg

At 123 lbs (56kg) I don’t find anything abysmal about your 2k score of 7:59. Best advice I could give would be that time and Mother Nature will pull up along side you and provide much of the improvements you seek. At 15 yrs of age I know that’s not what you want to hear, but stay the course as long...

Re: Is Meters/Stroke a Useful Metric?

A lot of folks who struggle to to improve what I would consider important metrics (pace) seem to find solace in "improving" other metrics, instead. So, to them, it's useful.

Re: Endurance erging - A place to discuss 42, 50, 100k upwards.

When I finished the 50K, I honestly felt pretty mangled. I had lots of reasons to not be top form that day (3 hours sleep on a couch night before, baby waking up multiple times, blah blah), but did not feel ready to do another 50. I'm hoping there is a mental aspect to it, in that the last 5k of an...
