Re: Travis Gardner training
Hello - I’ve been watching some videos on YouTube from Travis Gardner, though he hasn’t posted in a while. He advocates a drag factor in training (and even racing) which is quite a bit lower than I see most posters use - 100 to 110 is typical, though he does differentiate men/women/youth etc. He se...

How does training affect your sleep?
Recently I saw some people mentioning sleep problems or dealing with bouts of insomnia. For quite a while now I find myself waking up annoyingly early, unable to fall asleep again. Which set me wondering: How does training affect your sleep? Do you notice any correlation with or differences between ...

Re: Rowerg vs skierg?
I also have all three, but have to confess that I hardly use the skierg. Apparently most people find the skierg easier on the back than the rower. However, for me the skierg seems to put a greater strain on my lower back, opposed to rowing. Maybe my technique is off.

Re: Strategies for the aging athlete
Ultrarunner Courtney Dauwalter often talks about her love for nachos and beer. For such an amazing athlete, she is surprisingly relaxed in her diet. Can’t argue with her results though. Diet seems to be a highly personal thing indeed.

Re: Strategies for the aging athlete
Sure. I consumed very much white sugar and sweets, normal amount was ca. 200g per day, besides the other "normal" stuff. Many of them considered healthy, full wheat/rye bread, cheese, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish. I started to feel some undefined issues way back before more serious issues popp...

Re: Strategies for the aging athlete
I did much sport my whole life, so I really should be able to do this amount and intensity  But when I felt the decline in recovery and at the same time some health issues popped up, this made me think about my diet, as I assumed my other lifestyle factors were quite in check. After the change...

Re: Strategies for the aging athlete
I get 44, so I'm in the same range than you. I can definitely confirm, recovery is not the same like in my 20s  This changed a lot since I changed my diet and tried different things, so I would say this was the most significant adjustment I made. I can do 3 intense gym sessions per week and av...

Strategies for the aging athlete
A few posts on age related struggles and decline by Stu, Keith and Mike in the Today-thread sparked my interested. I thought this might be worthy of a separate thread. Aging is something I’m personally struggling with: at 45 I’m no longer able to train as I was in my twenties and thirties. However, ...

Re: Rowing for Base Building - Strategy Advice
It's funny you mention this because I just saw a short clip of Justin Farina and Eric Murray discussing steady state work around 80% being a better target for most. Justin Farina is a monster on the erg and Eric Murray is, well, Eric Murray. https://youtu.be/8YdVO2SG3DU I think you mean this one?

Re: VO2MAX calculator gone??
Sorry if that’s more info than you were looking for. Short answer: too much intensity, not enough volume. As soon as I reduced the amount of interval work and built the endurance volume back up, my race times improved across the board. The thing is, I always knew the best way to train to get the re...

Re: VO2MAX calculator gone??
My training methodology had improved. In my mid-50s, when I was concentrating more on road and trail running than rowing, I noticed that my times were slipping even faster than age would predict, so I reviewed my training methodology, made some modifications, and saw a significant rebound in perfor...

Re: Will the correct average HR please stand up?
It was already written, ergdata calculates the real average for the ergdata screen after your workout, but can only upload the HR at each end of the split for the logbook to stay consistent to the older standard. As typically the HR raises during the splits, the logbook value will always be higher....

Re: Will the correct average HR please stand up?
Ergdata records per-stroke data. But when you upload it to the logbook, I'm not sure how it calculates the average. It may do the same as the PM[345]. You can download the per-stroke data as a spreadsheet and calculate per-stroke average or even average over time. I haven't tried this yet, but it i...

Re: Will the correct average HR please stand up?
Thanks all, I think that the answer indeed lies in the splits. Both ED and the log report HR at the end of the split interval. Averaging these numbers give me the 148 mentioned above. However, ED seems to also report the true mean, which of course is slightly lower. I’m with you, Stu. I only keep ha...
