Re: Recommend me a heart rate monitor
A bit late to this party but my OH1+ was worth every penny. 99% as accurate as a chest strap but dramatically more comfortable, secure, and easy to wear.

Re: Rowing = Horizontal Deadlift ?
I think that the "horizontal deadlift" comparison comes from the similar way in which you are gripping the handle/bar down near your feet. Other than that, it's not much like a deadlift at all. The handle is not over the middle of your feet like the bar is in a deadlift. Your knee angle is far more ...

Re: How to read Pete Plan Beginner?
500m/2 min rest is an interval session. You program it into your PM and it will give you a 2m rest after each 500m. It's probably best if you row gently during that rest but it doesn't display anything on the monitor so you could just get up and walk around. Personally, I row gently about half the r...

Re: Extremely fatigued today. Normal? Next steps?
You should take at least one day off per week to recover. The majority of your volume should be UT2. Are you sure you're rowing UT2 and not higher? It should feel very easy. Also, you jumped from 35k meters/week (that already seems like a fair amount for a novice) to 70k/week. That's a huge bump and...

Re: Concept2 Model D Rower -- HR monitoring
3:34m/500m average As others have pointed out, this ^^^^ is your problem - your heart isn't working hard because you aren't rowing hard. To use a cycling analogy, it's as if someone is on a bike, flat road, no wind, going 10 mph, and wondering why their heart rate isn't higher. Good Luck To be fair...

Re: what if we quit weight lifting and go on with rowing
This is very true. Sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) naturally occurs as we age. We must fight this tendency if we want to live longer, healthier and more physically able lives. The only way to fight this is with weight training. Resist the urge to stop. It's also never to early or late in life to s...

Re: what if we quit weight lifting and go on with rowing
just stumbled over this article showing the value of strength training https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27580152/ Just from the abstract, it seems to compare women weightlifting vs. women doing...nothing. What needs to be done is compare weightlifting with other forms of exercise. The article you li...

Re: Weight Impacting Performance
Most people here seem to be talking about otw performance, where lower weight has a significant impact. I'm curious about how weight affects performance on the erg. I'm 6'3" (1.91m), 220 lbs (102kg) and I've been rowing a lot more and doing a lot less (ie, almost none) weightlifting. I've started to...

Re: Wanting to go Sub7 2K for the first time - anybody onboard?
Shortly after doing my 2k I realized that I wasn't doing enough volume to complete the Great Lakes challenge so I upped the volume, doing 145k/week. That lasted all of 1 day. I decided to give up on that challenge and dropped my training volume to about 70k/week. My plan is similar to the one that I...

Re: what if we quit weight lifting and go on with rowing
I am skeptical because iirc the "strength training" advice is based on research that simply shows a correlation between loss of muscle mass and mortality at older age. It takes a very minimal amount of physical activity to maintain muscle mass at a healthy level as you age. Someone who gardens and w...

Re: Too much volume? (trying to complete Great Lakes challenge)
Thanks for the replies and advice. I'm definitely taking a day off each week (I already do this). I have the time, since I'm unemployed. I guess I am mainly concerned about injury risk and overtraining. If it's going to be counter-productive then I'd rather not suffer. Here are a the plans I'm think...

Too much volume? (trying to complete Great Lakes challenge)
I just realized today that the Great Lakes challenge ends December 1, not December 31. That bumps my weekly requirement from about 100k a week to about 140k a week. It was already a big jump to do 100k/week since before that I was mostly just doing 10k 3x/week otw + some additional 10k erg workouts ...

Re: what if we quit weight lifting and go on with rowing
what if we quit weight lifting and go on with concept 2 rowing and bodyweight exercises like pull ups, push ups. after 40 years old age. thanks IMO you should not stop weights ever - muscle mass becomes more important as you age, not less. Strong people with muscles live longer healthier lives so d...

Re: Wanting to go Sub7 2K for the first time - anybody onboard?
I've uploaded my training plan for the next 4 months (2 8-week cycles) to a google doc if anyone is interested. It's like the Pete Plan with more UT2 volume so that I can complete the Great Lakes challenge. I'll do a 2k after each 8-week cycle. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QebYAxJMUMFBuxpHZK_...

Re: Pondering the Beginner Pete Plan
I feel like given your 2k time, 2:20 will be too fast for your steady state rows. Sure, you can do it no problem, but your heartrate will be much higher than it should be. I'd say row the longer (10k+) pieces around 2:35-2:40. They will feel easy. They should feel easy. Unless I'm mistaken, and the ...
