Re: Effort level percentage...threshold tests???
Once you have the stroke and basics squared away so your technique is consistent and repeatable you can do power or pace tests, I’ve done a 20min FTP and programmed it into training peaks and it works out my zones, I can the train according to zones pretty much as you will do in cycling. Lack of po...

Re: Effort level percentage...threshold tests???
One main problem of using FTP for rowing is there aren’t any (I can find) off the shelf training plans that use %power, they mainly use pacing plans To spell it all out for those unfamiliar with the numbers, for rowing there's a direct exponential relationship between Watts and Pace: W are proporti...

Re: 80/20 What?
Following Seiler, Couzens, Joe Friel, Muffatone, etc ..how do we polarize for say the 10hours that we can train a week ? This cyclist follows a pure polarized approach. (He is an elite endurance cyclist). Look at his 10 hour per week workout. It maps directly into erging. https://www.youtube.com/wa...

Re: Fused Ankle
Whilst my ankle isn’t fused, I have limited range of motion and my leg is 1.5 “ shorter following a series of lower leg injuries, over the last 18months, I’ve tried wooden wedges, angled shoe implants, and now I’m trying a climbing shoe on my good leg and a thick soled running boot on my bad one! Ho...

Re: 80/20 What?
Following Seiler, Couzens, Joe Friel, Muffatone, etc and a lot of other endurance coaches, in other sports,(sadly with very little on rowing) the 80/20 ratio, however you split it sessions or time, the key constant denominator is to do your easy sessions, really easy and your hard really hard.. whic...

Re: Indoor rowing competitions: 'heavy-shell' vs 'light-shell' format
Aren’t taller height and longer lever length more important to higher rowing performance than just singleing out weight?

Re: Boredom question
“Embrace the boredom” don’t think about it or worry about it, it’s part of it. If I’m doing easy 1.5 hour plus rows/ rides I’ll watch a match on the TV, I now try to do my longest rows when I’d previously have been sat on the sofa watching the footie, makes me feel doubly smug, exercise and good spo...

Re: Rowing a marathon seeking training tips
The Eddie Fletcher plan is good if you are trying for a good time. I found it a bit much for me and wound up following a 14 week online running marathon plan. It was basically a program of 4 rows per week with increasing distances and a long row on the weekend which worked up to 36km two weeks befo...

An interesting read https://evanpeikon.medium.com/performance-physiology-101-identifying-training-respiratory-limitations-b82263c57a37 Having reread this article, 3 factors seem to predominantly limit performance 1) limited respiratory system which can be either, or both inspiration/ expiration 2) ...

Re: Could rowers benefit from Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training ?
Yeah the whole subject is interesting, I’ve read similar things also that our panting type expiration is due to not only C02 levels but also due to lactate breaking down into hydrogen ions that we then exhale, leading to the burning throat sometime experienced after really hard sessions.. Neat. I'd...

Re: Could rowers benefit from Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training ?
Hey chill out, as I’ve said I’ve tried a powerbreathe and still have it! Just didn’t see any improvement in my rowing performance, and as I said I can’t vouch for iwatch O2 accuracy, but having taken several readings immediately after exercise I always get 100%, I will then see a dip in 02 levels o...
