Re: SPM?
A SkiErg stroke rate in the low 30's is indicative of an excessive stroke length. Shortening the stroke and getting the drive more from your hips/core, you should be able to maintain stroke rates in the 40's even in endurance sessions. In 1000m intervals stroke rates in the 50's are appropriate. You...

Re: drive:recovery ratio
Watching the YouTube video of Andreas Nygaard at the final stages of his sub-2:30 SkiErg marathon, it's clear that his drive/recovery ratio is rather close to 1/1. I guess what's the optimal ratio will depend on the individual.

Re: Aerobic base training metric: meters-per-beat
Overall I don't know if the metric you mention gives me any advantage. For the long steady pieces I typically don't get caught by ego and go too fast. When I understand correctly, this is the main reason you did this? Indeed. The metric meter/beat acts for me as an 'ego buster'... :) At long steady...

Re: Aerobic base training metric: meters-per-beat
If I would train slightly below or at twice my resting HR, I would only be allowed to take a walk. My resting HR is 50 or below, depending on my recovery state. When I take a walk at normal speed, ~11min per km, my HR average is about 85. I typically do long sessions on the rower at HR ~135 with no...

Re: Aerobic base training metric: meters-per-beat
I think watts/HR would be a better measure. The trouble with pace is that the effort to go faster is super-linear with speed. An even better measure would, I think, be watts/HRR. HRR (heart rate reserve) is (HR - rest HR)/(Max HR - rest HR). Stephen Seiler (Mr. Polarized Training) suggests HRR is a...

Re: Aerobic base training metric: meters-per-beat
Ah yes, that makes a lot of sense. Your result is also in line with my experience that HR should be kept below 2 HRrest. If I add a small friction term linear in speed: HR - HRrest = a v^3 + b v and redo the math, then it appears that the HR for which HR/v reaches a minimum will be slightly larger t...

Aerobic base training metric: meters-per-beat
Recently I started to evaluate the meters covered per heartbeat in my zone 2 (aerobic base / steady state) trainings. The maths is straightforward: first derive the average speed (in meters per minute) by dividing the distance covered during training by the duration in minutes. The average speed is ...

Re: Are your skierg results similar to your rower results?
It's a question RowErg users are interested in once they start exercising on the SkiErg: "what progression should I expect?". To throw more light on this matter, I analysed the RowErg and SkiErg world records for distances of 500 - 5000 meter and ages from 19 to 74 years. It turns out that, regardle...

Neat. How did you achieve this?

BikeErg maintenance
As I'm approaching 10 million meters on my BikeErg, I wonder: any maintenance that might be worth doing? So far the only 'maintenance' I have done is cleaning the handlebar and other parts following each sweaty session. Despite this lack of attention, the bike still looks great and everything remain...

Re: Are your skierg results similar to your rower results?
In general, athletes on the SkiErg are slower than athletes on the RowErg. This difference is quite pronounced; as of today 376 athletes have achieved a sub-6 2k on the RowErg. On the SkiErg only two athletes have achieved the same. With regards to rate-of-progression: The RowErg has a much longer h...

If you discuss it in advance, you might agree with the sport test folks to bring your SkiErg to the sport test lab, and do the VO2max test on the SkiErg?

HR ramp-up during short anaerobic bursts
Today I did the Valentine's Challenge (2 minutes and 14 seconds all-out) on the SkiErg. I am very happy with the result, but noticed afterwards that my heart rate stayed relatively low. More specifically, my HR started at 97 bpm and over the duration of the exercise gradually ramped up to 132 bpm. T...

Re: Skierg stroke rate
Useful insights Sally. I have now observed the same: higher powers with shorter strokes at higher stroke rates. About two months ago I did a 1k time trial on the SkiErg. Achieved 245 Watts at rate 45 (over 3:45.3 min:sec). Now with shorter strokes I did a 4 min time trial at rate 54. I completed 107...
