Re: Rowing with Bruised Rib

Thanks Tony and Franklin. It's good to hear from other rowers who have gone through something similar. I got back to rowing a couple of weeks ago but haven't done anything overly impressive yet. (It's disheartening how much progress you can lose, even while maintaining an exercise routine in the mea...

Re: Rowing with Bruised Rib

Thanks friends. I have a penchant for underestimating healing and recovery time. Hard to achieve that balance between pessimistic and pie-in-the-sky outlooks. I think everyone has brought up on-point suggestions: give it plenty of time, find alternate exercises (thank goodness the gyms have reopened...

Rowing with Bruised Rib

NY rower in search of expert advice. I wish I was making this up, but one week ago someone hugged me and squeezed so hard that I felt a 'pop' in one of my ribs. It's toward the top beneath my right armpit. Must have got me at just the right (wrong) angle. I was thinking a few days off the rower woul...

Re: Another Drag Factor Question

The very brave folks get a side-on video of their rowing on YouTube and post the link on here for the critics to tear into. I tell you, uploading a side-on video was one of the best things I could have done. No shame and no regrets; seriously, I got all kinds of great tips and encouragement from sh...

Eight volunteers in a single study. Pretty impressive numbers there - hard to argue with that data.

Salute, New York Times.

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

Good work. The only thing I'd add is don't ignore breathing technique. It's hard to see from the video but try to exhale as you pull back (drive) and inhale on the recovery. It's not the most important element of good form but if you can get the breathing rhythm right it will help. So true. I think...

Re: Newbie - Feel "lopsided"; Sweaty hands; Sore butt

These gents said it well. I'm still quite new myself but have found favor in using gloves. My hands have calloused but not nearly as bad as they did in the beginning, when I was going without. I've never used chalk but with only a month under my belt, there's a lot I haven't tried. I've not used the...

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

I hadn't thought of pulling too much. You're right. That's the weakest part of the stroke so why am I tempted to give it a good yank?

Thanks to all of you for the solid feedback. It's tremendously helpful!

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

Hey everyone - me again. I think I've made some improvements to my form over the last month, thanks to all of the great suggestions here. I believe I have been keeping them all in mind but I'm hoping to have a few people verify. I've become more comfortable on the C2 and rather than repeatedly chant...

Re: Have you seen how much demand there is for home fitness equipment?

If I want to go old-school, I have a pile of boulders in my backyard too (landscaping boulders all over). Wouldn't mind a truck tire as well. There's a tire shop in a neighboring town that will put their old junk tires outside - one tire at a time - with a sign that says "free exercise tire." They'...

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

Hey, I appreciate the conversation. It's good to be familiar with more of the 'ins and outs' of recording and uploading results. Everyone has raised good points and Jim's testament is valid; it'd be pretty easy to tell if someone is blowing smoke if their verified results are nothing at all like the...

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

I'm so glad you mentioned the 'Just Row' feature. Truthfully that's all I had been doing prior to this morning, but now I know choosing a workout is a better option as far as tracking goes. I've been uploading the data to my C2 logbook but I've learned that your results aren't often qualified when u...

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

Hi Jim! I ought to add that to my signature like you have on yours! I'll stay active on here so I can glean more from all of you and become a regular member of the rowing community. I'm 65", 127 lbs, 29 years old. I live in Western New York, USA. I'm a small-town girl that has more fun with cards, s...

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

Oooh, Ombrax - great point. I definitely would see that becoming an issue. I spend a lot of time on the computer for my job and have dealt with a few flare-ups in my hands, especially these days when I'm working from home and don't have the classic office setup where the computer, desk, and chair ar...

Re: Indoor Rowing Form

Awesome feedback! This morning I adjusted the foot straps and tried to keep all of these points in mind. I averaged 2:15/500m at 25 s/m in 30 minutes. Next time I'll lower the drag and try to ramp up the stats a little more. You're the best! I'm really looking forward to joining a rowing club (and h...
