Re: Starting from sedentary feeling discouraged
Hi, How is it going now? I hope you are continuing even if you are just doing very short sessions. When I started out, I would do a little bit, then walk around the block or up and down the stairs, then do a bit more. I really like to do drills especially pause drills when I am tired, actually I lik...

Re: New and using my legs
Just keep working on your form. Practice with some of the videos. Do lots of drills, pick drills, pause drills, etc. Usually I do pause drills stopping at body over in almost every warmup. But once in a while, try pausing at the other points. Or do reverse pick drill where instead of starting with a...

Re: 11 inactive sedentary years
To. prevent blisters, first of all, don't grip too tightly. Every so often, wiggle your fingers. It makes a huge difference to me if I avoid long stretches whenever I come back from a vacation or break--maybe intervals like 8 minutes or less on, 2 minutes rest. If the skin on my hands is feeling it ...

Re: starting again
Erik, it's good to hear you have started in with walking. I think when people were really fit previously, they tend to do too much and aim too high when they try to get back into it, and it is better to start out with small changes and build back up. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Rowing with one arm shorter
Have you had any success with making changes to your grip? I was just thinking of you as I noticed the adjustments friends have made to accommodate hand issues. (Mostly they use padding to make the handle larger to grip it with arthritis.) Since all you need to do really is hook the fingers over the...

Re: Boredom question
Work on something specific, training for a specific goal helps. Work on technique. You could look up videos on you tube for different drills and workouts and follow along.

Re: Warn up and cool down concept 2 question
Warm up: About 10 minutes, with feet out, some drills like pick drill and pause drills, starting pretty easy and just working on range of motion, then once warmed up, a few intervals of higher stroke rates or harder pressure to start feeling warmed up. That video from Training Tall looks useful. Coo...

Re: Pain behind and under the outer ankle
This is the kind of thing you want to fix or at least not exacerbate so take it easy while you figure it out. I sometimes have pain in that area when my previously sprained ankle is acting up. Go back to shorter workouts for a time and build up slowly. (10% increase is good guideline for building up...

Re: Improvement in seating posture?
yes, definitely! It took me a while to develop the core strength and the habit to keep checking my posture, but it's made a huge difference in my every day sitting posture as well as my rowing.

Re: crepitus and bad knees, is rowing still okay?
everyone is different and it would be best to get your doctor to help you. Or a physical therapist. I saw a physical therapist a couple of times after injuring the knee running and it was very helpful. A couple of years ago, when ramping up exercise levels, I paid for a session of PT (since I wasn't...

Re: Metronome Training
I think it sounds like a good idea for once in a while. It is hard for me to maintain a steady stroke rate and there are times when I don't want to look at the monitor all the time but could use some help staying on track. Sometimes I like to close my eyes and just try to feel what I am doing but I ...

Re: Weight loss as a competitive rower?
At your age and activity level, just eat good, whole, real foods and don't think about your weight. Minimize the soda and the sweets except for occasional treats and eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, grains, protein, anything that is real food and not packaged, overprocessed stuff. Our society is...

Re: Hello from a newbie with a few idiotic questions
Sore glutes is one thing, but I don't think experiencing pins and needles is ideal. If that is still going on, I would recommend taking short breaks from sitting on the rower and do something else, like going up and down the stairs or running around the block, to keep your heart rate up but avoid pi...

Re: 2nd 5K-still newbie
I am a woman of the same age, not much of an athlete but using the erg quite regularly the past three years, and my heart rate up goes up to about 164 at the end of a hard set. I only started using a heart rate monitor recently and I didn't expect the numbers to be so high, either, just based on th...
