Re: Recovering from sickness!?

Looking at your age, it seems to me that you don't really have any experience in getting a major illness, and going through the recovery process. A lot of us have been through a lifetime of various illnesses and injuries, and have a lot more experience in it! :) It just takes time, and you want to a...

Re: Heart monitor accuracy and afib

My afibs cause watches and PM to lock at 240, using a belt signal. Both work up to about 95, but over that I see multiple impulses on the watch (not PM), which don't show at all on a finger Oxymeter. So I stick to Watts. It is (or was) thought that aerobic HR Range used is linear with Watts, so no ...

Heart monitor accuracy and afib

I've always had issues with a three different chest type heart monitors, and a variety of receivers, going 'out of wack' on my heart rate. It'll show what it really is, then drops down, then nothing. May pick up, may not. Using electrolytic gel on the pickups, moving the strap above/below nipples, n...

Drag factor is usually between 125-130. Stroke rate is dependant on the session. Sometimes I'll do a 30r20, if I'm doing a 6k-10k it's usually around 22-24r.
I'd drop the drag to the absolute minimum (depends on how dirty the fan unit is) until you feel like you're healed

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Best wishes on your recovery. Some comments from this retired cardiac telemetry RN: 5 staples to cover a 6 inch incision sounds rather stingy. Your hernia operation was major surgery & they sent you home with only Tylenol? I would have expected at least Norco 10/325, every 4 hours. I guess they're ...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

We have a social medicine scheme here, so even though my inguinal hernia had gotten to the point where it looked like I had two scrotums, I still had to pull strings and throw a temper tantrum, before they'd repair it. Hadn't even been able to go for walks for almost three months before the surgery ...

Re: Heart monitor display

Still having monitor 'issues'. I've tried three different brands of HR monitors, and four different receivers (OTW and erg), battery changes, and I see the same issues - HR appears 'reasonable', then, after around 45 minutes, they'll show my HR dropping into the 'you have to be kidding range'. After...

Re: Open Water Rowing

You can tell the competence of an organization as to how it reacts to sudden change. The Head of the Weir race held on October 8th this year...against the weatherbeaten boards of the old Coast Guard station and our faces in the sun, my brother and I decided that if you stay out of the wind and in t...

Re: Max heart rate

I notice that my heartrate goes up 5 BPM before I need to burp and goes down again after. Could take a few minutes before that happens during rowing though. Should that count as (over)training? Ha ha, mine goes the other direction when I either burp or pass wind! The bpm will drop about 5 beats for...

How does everyone else compare using the formula of 205-0.41 x age????????
Close for me as well. Max rate tested based on 6x500m was 182, rating came out to 177.

In light that I wanted to puke as soon as I got enough air in to do so, maybe I should have capped at 177 :) :) :)

Re: Early morning exercise

Define 'early morning'. I start one job around 0445, work until 0700-0800, work out until about 0930 while it's still 'cool' (84*F, 29*C), have a snack, shower, 20 minute nap, then back to my other job. Mid-day until past sundown, the temp/humidity is a killer here, 'comfort factor' >104*F, 40*C = M...

Re: Early morning exercise

I work out starting 0700-0800 most mornings because of the heat and humidity here, but it's during long lunch in my work day (I'll start work at 0430)

Re: About folding or not folding

To save space, I put mine up everyday, but my wife has cats that go crazy(er) some times trying to catch geckos.

I put an eye in the ceiling, and made a bridle to go on the back leg of the erg, so the erg can't be tipped.

Re: Rowing / Diet for high cholesterol

Genetics makes a huge difference. All of my father's family (and it was a large extended one) died of coronary heart disease, starting at age 41. My body refuses to respond to dietary cholesterol changes. Started on a relatively low dose statin, I'm now in the 'good to go' range. Most people are som...

Re: Help with goal

No help from any rowing club, ... We (American Samoa) has a 'rowing organisation' which had Swift coastal singles, doubles, and quads, as well as a couple of C2s, donated to it by World Rowing. Unfortunately, they won't let anyone use the boats, and the C2's are in her fitness centre. So, I put tog...
