Re: How to determine the appropriate HIIT ?
There is a problem with very short rest intervals. Will give lots of starts which is very tough on the back. A thing to consider. Whilst I don't disagree, a rolling start prior to the short interval start may well be best here to help alleviate the torque spikes. The efficacy of the format of these...

Re: How to determine the appropriate HIIT ?
1) I understood from Steve Seilers publications that polarized training is the most efficient training method. 2) Currently I roughly follow Petes Plan training plan ( https://thepeteplan.wordpress.com/the-pete-plan/ ), which is roughly based on the wolverine plan. Are these plans using the polariz...

Roughly linked to this, some of would find this article interesting: https://hiitscience.com/hiit-your-physiological-target-in-sprint-kayak/ The book itself on this sight is hard going but very interesting. If it’s right, some thinking of interval training on this site is potentially outdated. Ther...

Re: New to erging or wondering why you're not improving? Here's some good info.
—Excerpted from the Chambers Q&A: Q Hi Bill, I am a follower of polarization training for over 4 years. I am happy with the long 18k-26k around 75% HR sculling/erging. What I am struggling about is the 10-15% red zone training. I cannot manage it without greater percent of yellow zone. What type of...

I also added fast sessions to my schedule which Maffetone does advocate after a ''base building'' period of aerobic development and is also backed up by Seiler and his ''Polarised Training'' This is actually a fundamental key difference not a similarity - Maffetone suggests intensity after the base...

Re: New to erging or wondering why you're not improving? Here's some good info.
With erging I have found that some higher power work is essential...I seem to lose the feel for a hard effort if I don't train much at or around that level. ......but that makes complete sense. It's about a sports specificity (or supporting the specific physiology required) but (crucially) then ach...

The guy who started the thread...Rod, you may not be familiar with. He's low 60s and highly aerobic dominant. He's seen a tangible bump in performance e.g. ~15870m to ~16000m for the hour, since I think working with a coach. Whether you'd class that as dramatic or not is debateable. I'm wondering w...

A good article here for anyone who's ever wondered why they're not improving and new people that want to know the best way to train; http://whchambers.com/always-training-in-the-middle-can-be-costly-in-fact-it-can-cost-you-your-season-and-possibly-your-health/ It’s a viewpoint to be sure but I woul...

Re: Rest periods for intervals of 1 min or less
Sounds interesting...got a link for the book? This'll be it. It's a bit steep for a casual read, though. https://www.amazon.com.au/Science-Application-Intensity-Interval-Training/dp/1492552127 <> See what you mean. Bryce is a bike-racer I often bumped into. He's also an academic so suspect he came ...

Re: New to erging or wondering why you're not improving? Here's some good info.
It obviously works for many people, and I'm actually giving it a go myself for a few months (so I'm not a complete skeptic). But there's something about the way that many Maffetone-related articles (not this one, actually - this is pretty fair) present their information that reminds me of the "eat ...

Re: Rest periods for intervals of 1 min or less
Hi Paul. I'd strongly recommend you read any of the recent work or papers by Paul Laursen. His stuff is the leading edge on HIIT theory and session prescription/manipulation (I just got his book for my birthday and its an inch thick !). The problem with some traditional session prescription is that ...

Re: Staying anchored when sprinting
My max rating is like 46spm. You have to be up front in that a modified stroke is used at anything much higher that simply wouldn't work on anything other than the erg. Your no longer doing a full stroke its a modified stroke that doesnt work for anything other than short sprints. No problem stayin...
