Re: Relatively Weak 2km Time
some peopel have already insinuated this (hjs?) but aside from technique, even more fundamentally, there's no "one" constant relationship between paces over different durations. every individual's pace:duration curve will be slightly different. You can see it in pretty stark terms when you look at 8...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
and Jan Olbrecht in the science of winning. He always made the point that endurance didn't mean going long AND hard and that going long and hard (which really means only kinda hard) is its own separate workout with its own time and place. In terms of it being gimmicky: i think that's the whole point...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
I thought maffetone was just train low? It seems that you share that misunderstanding with most people who have opinions on Maffetone. Saying that Maffetone is only low intensity is like saying that Wolverine is only L4. lol then it's strange to me that anyone would argue against it. at least in co...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
Have tried Maffetone training with running and am not really convinced in it as a way to improve performance. I see it as great for building aerobic fitness after a layoff, general health and recovery efforts. As far as training to improve is concerned then it's interval training all the way for me...

Re: Maintaining leg strength
Unless you were power lifting before I am surprised that your leg strength has dropped with the training you have done. Someone more technical may be along soon. On the subject I found this interesting article. https://buff.ly/2SY8Az2 About this article. The person clearly knows what she's talking ...

Re: Maintaining leg strength
This isn't "overtraining" btw. You would not be overtrained. You just a reduced training load for a few days to give the body time to adapt and get stronger from the stimulus you've been giving it. A lot of people do three weeks at a time of load (building load progressively), then one week at a mu...

Re: Maintaining leg strength
Yeah i agree that it seems unlikely you should have lost this much peak power just by training the aerobic system more. It's true that you have to pick and choose to some extent--meaning any effort you allocate one place (e.g. aerobic) is by definition effort you can't allocate elsewhere (e.g. pushi...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
interesting, because an hour a day of exercise is more than probably the vast majority of people do, and you're calling it sedentary :). Were you just not going that hard? and yeah peak power training (I'm assuming you're talking about peak power with the wattbike) is different than endurance traini...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
One way not to do this is to slow down and at the same time, reduce your volume. Hardly earth-shattering news. Life getting in the way of erging. I question that’s been in my mind for a while about what is ‘long’ and what is ‘volume’. If two different types rowed for an hour at 70% HR but one cover...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
Mitchel, first get that marathon done. After that you could introduce some more speed. This should break your plateau. Also keep in mind, after the first early gains, progress does still come, but much slower..... You should see my training  Henry, would you advise him NOT to add any speed wh...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
Henry, thanks for weighing in. My endurance over the past year has improved with my long rows at 140-145, but my pace has clearly plateaued. I routinely row half marathons at 2:25. It may be my poor technique, or perhaps I have detrained myself into this current state as I prepared myself for my ma...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
I think in a lot of ways this is right but we should remember, you can improve a lot from low intensity training as you work up to those hours. Sure, just depends on how well trained you are but I would wager that the majority of people who are researching principles such as Maffetone, already are ...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
On the bike you'd be looking at 15hrs minimum a week, preferably 20. A pro athlete who uses this approach (such as Mark Allen) I believe was doing 35hrs/week. I think in a lot of ways this is right but we should remember, you can improve a lot from low intensity training as you work up to those hou...

Re: Weights: Strength & Hypertrophy
Also, changing how you think about this issue might help you contextualize and apply the advice you're getting and the lessons you're learning on your own. KeithT said it best a few posts back, you can also think about it as strength (or, max force) vs. capacity instead of strength vs. hypertrophy. ...
