Well this Crewsaver Crewfit 165N Sport is the first lifejacket that I have ever worn. It is really comfortable, and not restrictive in any way. I have just rowed 21 miles up the Thames in it, and hardly noticed that it was on.
Worth checking out.

Re: London Great River Race - cushion or not?
UPDATE FYI: Cyclist2 was right on the mark - I completed the row, without any cushioning, without the slightest hint of pain. Interesting experience, but not sure whether I enjoyed it enough to do it again, though, as it's not the cheapest day out.

London Great River Race - cushion or not?
I am rowing a fixed-seat gig in this year's race, on September 14th. Twenty-one miles up the Thames, about three-and-a-quarter hours, although there will be some rotation, with four oars between six crew (tradition dictates that a passenger must be carried). Although I have never rowed with a cushio...

Re: Life-jacket Manual Conversion query
I thought that I had closed this earlier. Almost as soon as I posted, I received confirmation that - of course - the Spinlock kit will be fine for my jacket.

Life-jacket Manual Conversion query
Hi All, I have a Crewsaver Crewfit 165N Sport automatic life-jacket, which as far as I can make out has the identical automatic UML-5 firing mechanism to the Spinlock DeskVest Lite. The latter has available an easily reversible manual conversion 'kit' (essentially, it's a plastic bottle top, with a ...

Re: new rower, much slower 500m split than gym rowers
Just been reading a 6 page thread from back in early 2011 on this same argument. And the same person repeating the exact same stuff. It's just he has a new audience this time around  we found negligable differences in effort required between ergs with tight vs loose bungees Thanks - could have...

Re: new rower, much slower 500m split than gym rowers
I personally feel that cord variation, being at the most maybe 1 second per 500 meters, is not a significant factor, certainly not when compared to the vast difference in people's weights, and the fact that weight is not accounted for in the rankings. My fault - I was mid-compose and interrupted by...

Re: new rower, much slower 500m split than gym rowers
Would be nice if the PM5 - which knows the history of stroke count, stroke lengths, drag factors, watts etc experienced by the cord - could be programmed with an algorithm to factor its wear into a performance rating which is transferable between machines. It would appear that a barely-heavyweight (...

Re: new rower, much slower 500m split than gym rowers
At a 1:40 split time, at 36 spm, this is 60 strokes in that time. If your average stroke length is 4.5 feet, in that time you will be moving the handle a total of 270 feet during the drive portion of the stroke. If the elastic cord in your home unit requires 2 pounds extra force to stretch than the...

Re: new rower, much slower 500m split than gym rowers
If you read the last part of my post thats the important bit that you failed to pickup on. The OP may have a valid case, but i doubt every man and his dog who jumps in here now stating similar occurrences with not quite as large a "discrepancy" and has vague ideas has one as well. In that 40 sec, I...

Re: new rower, much slower 500m split than gym rowers
Yunno, the more i think about this stuff, it could be perception tbh. Some days i can row @ 2:02 pace r22 and feel nicely settled, and it doesn't feel like i'm needing to work too hard, then other days @ 2:05 pace r21 it can feel like a grind, all done at the same df. A lot is how fresh you are and...

Re: Optimising the catch
Common to see rowers rushing up to the catch fast enough that they introduce slack in the chain that is then ungracefully removed during the drive. Hope everyone had a great weekend. yes, I think there's still an element of that - despite the 'eggshell' mindset that I mentioned earlier - in my acti...

Yes, Ombrax, I suspect you're right - but I wondered what he would say?
