Re: Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Thanks for context Mark and hjs. Hobbit - I wouldn't have believed it until I looked it up but you're right, about 30th in the 10k would be 29:00 in 2018. For some perspective on that though (and first and foremost let me reiterate that it was a speculative time, I never actually gave that effort - ...

Re: Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Ending the year with a 35:55.x and 6:39.x Didn't end up going for other distances, just too little time with the holidays. Huge thanks to everyone who commented and gave advice. Hopefully back to running in 2019 but will be on the erg probably 1x per week. One final question: I was speaking with som...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!

Final attempt on the 10k today aiming for 35:44 (4k @ 1:48, 4k @ 1:47, 2k @ 1:46). Started a wee too fast for 4k, so intentionally slowed down (unintentionally by too much) for 4k, didn't have enough to pull it off in the end. Still got a 20 second PR for 35:56. Need to invest in a headband. Even wi...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!

Went for a 2k best today. Started out too fast and spent the last 4 minutes watching the average 500 pace slowly climb up from 1:37.5 but managed to keep it under 1:40 at the finish (not by much). 6:39.x, met my goal time, almost passed out and vomited simultaneously. Trachea feels like I've been in...

Re: Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Mark- I was 20-30lbs lighter and 5-15 years younger when I would have been capable of 29:00. I would have liked to have gotten into rowing earlier, too old and busy now to consider it. hjs- My specialty was middle distances. I regularly raced on the track 800 - 1,500/mile, less frequently 3k - 5k. T...

Re: Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Remo- Awesome, thanks. Maybe that means I'll throw a 5k in. Mark- Tough question. Me now at very near the bottom of my fitness could maybe muster a 35:00 10k. I was never a 10k specialist so never attempted one at peak fitness but I suspect I could have gotten around 29:00. For you with no running b...

Re: Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Okay, I may throw in one session per week of fast 500m repeats just to see if it will help get my 2k time down by the end, my primary goal is still to keep fitness up, times are secondary. Plus I agree I am lacking strength but I'm fine on endurance. Got anxious today and decided to see where I was ...

Re: Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Danger- I tried slowing my rate down yesterday and it is difficult. I can kinda maintain 24-25 but 26-28 is more comfortable. Question: if you're on the water is it really more efficient to row slower? It seems counter intuitive to me to allow drag to slow you down, only to put a bigger (short term)...

Re: Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Wow, thanks for the responses. Mark- I checked out the video, my technique may not be as bad as I feared. I'm sure it's still bad but I'm probably not going to screw up (many) body parts. I typically run 60-80 miles per week and will race just about anything from a mile to half marathon. Getting old...

Been rowing 2 weeks - need some reasonable goals

Hello - new member here. I've recently taken up rowing on an indoor rower as a means of cross training until I can run again which will hopefully be in about a month. But since I'll be spending this time doing all the training I figured I may as well set some goals for a few distances. After that I'...
