Thanks for the very helpful advice. I will make the effort to practice at least once or twice a week in the racing shell but will plan to row my inaugural head race in the Aero. I'd appreciate any more advice, especially how to determine my race pace. I have discovered that technical ability totally...

Thanks for good advice. It seems that at a certain point, I'm better off in a familiar, but slower boat, rather than trying something sleeker, and faster, because I'm not ready for it. In general, assuming rowers of equal abilities, how much faster would a rower go in a racing shell compared to a bo...

choosing a racing boat: trade-offs of boat size
A novice rower; lots of endurance, but limited technical abilities. Can easily row the 5k distance for upcoming head race, but not sure whether I should attempt in a racing shell or stick with the practice Maas Aero. What's the trade-off, time wise (percent of best speed) between racing in a more st...

Here's one way you can use the drag setting for a work out.. it comes from one of Xeno's sets...so go to his site for more details. It's a great strength builder... Set drag to highest rating . Set the timer for 20 seconds row and 40 seconds rest. Set the screen to watts. Starting on the first inter...

Thanks for the advice! I have had a few lessons so I think I know the basics, but now need to practice. About your comment on ergs... doesn't training on the erg help build endurance and develop the muscles most useful to rowing? Since I'm a beginner, I can't really get a workout sculling because I ...

Thanks to both of you for the Maas suggestion. May I ask why you are parting with your boat if it makes you sad? Did you ever use your Maas in the open water? Have either of you heard of Echo or Alden boats? Can a lightweight racing sculler develop bad technique from using an open water boat? Thanks!

Thanks very much! Do you think that using a broader, more sturdy boat like the Alden and Echo will have any detrimental effects on technique in pure sculling which will resume in the fall. I wonder if it's easy to pick up any bad habits while using one of these more forgiving boats. I'm looking for ...

Open Water Sculling
Can anyone please recommend to me a scull, or modified scull, which can be used on sheltered, but open water (shallow bay at the beach). I am hoping to find something that enables basic sculling, but a bit more stable than a traditional scull, as I've got to deal with some wind, waves, jetskis and a...
