Breathing question
My erging is limited by my breathing. I'm breathing in a controlled way 2 breaths per stroke. The day before yesterday I did 5000m at an average 155 watts. Yesterday I was only able to do 117'watts for the same level of breathing and stroke rate. Is this just a reflection of fatigued muscles demandi...

5000m 21min 58sec drag 200 av 153 watts spm av 21.** comeback record.
Yesterday I had to cut the session short to 3000m. Had set off to do 10k easy but after 3k I was not feeling good so thought it best to stop. Today felt much better. Using 200 drag was an experiment. It felt fine.

Re: Weight equivalent of a drive
So at 5'7" I have to pull harder and faster or more often for the same power / pace? are there any accepted best methods for short rowers? You first of all simply need to get fitter :D less talk and more walk for you is number one :D :D A smaller rower in general simply has less lean mass he can us...

Re: Rating Up Question
Before I came to rowing, I had never seen so much talk about SPM and Wattage. Especially in running, and even in cycling, you just don’t hear it. In cycling, in some ways and times, power and cadence come up, but not to the exclusion of mph. In both, one is trying to get from point A to point B qui...

Re: Rating Up Question
Sometimes though watts is simpler than pace. For example it's easy to see improvements or increases in power in percentage terms. But with pace it isn't easy because a 10% increase in power does not result in a 10% increase in speed and the faster you go,the more power required per second improvemem...

5000m in 23 min 18 sec av watts 128 drag 120.
Did every 5th 100m at 225 to 275 watts.
So 10 hard 100m imtervals at 26/28 spm then easy 20 rpm between.
Felt better once I started.... Feel it was of some worth, so glad I forced myself to do it as was feeling pretty tired and weak.

Re: Rating Up Question
BobS says: "For a lot of people there is not much variation in the stroke, so they increase their speed by raising the rate." For individuals new to the activity, I think this simple statement adds a lot of clarity. What it also implies is that for others, their speed may not be increased (especial...

Re: Rating Up Question
When the stroke rate increases the flywheel does not slow down as much, you also tend to pull faster as well as return faster, but you are not necessarily pulling with as much force - because the flywheel is being accelerated from a faster speed at the start of the pull. So you need to make sure the...

Messed up my recovery yesterday. Instead of going to the pub after a shower and drinking 2 pints of Guinness a bag of peanuts and a ham roll I went to John Lewis food hall and bought food to cook in. Didn't eat for at leat 2 hours after training. This morning on dog walk legs feel weak and empty and...

Re: Rating Up Question
Thanks, I'm feeling better about it now. I'm hopeless at maths so I just look at the watts and spm on the monitor. I see going up and down the slide much as wasted energy so try to work on generating as much power per stroke as possible rather than high rate.

Trev: I apologize for offending your tender sensibilities. A more appropriate term for what I was talking about was coined by Valery Kleshnev. He calls it "effective Work Per Stroke (eWPS). You can download a spreadsheet to explore the concept here. http://www.biorow.com/Downloads.htm The concept i...
