It really depends on your college program for your ideal 2k time. Some d1 programs are happy with their average v8 2k time below 6:30, and some d1 programs want everyone under 6:00.

Gerhard: I'm the same way regarding heart rate. My max HR is 203, resting heart rate 42. But when I do steady state, my body settles around 170-180 bpm when I'd like to keep it at 155-165 bpm. I think it has something to do with the point at which our bodies transfer from aerobic work to anaerobic w...

Bob, you went to Berkeley?! I'm headed there next year! Did you row for Gladstone? He just left the program to train people for the Olympics at the California Rowing Club. I'm hoping his replacement is just as good of a coach as he was. And Eric - I was 5'11 120 lbs in 8th grade. I wouldn't worry ab...

I think everyone has a bad day on the erg every once in a while. I had a succession of bad days when I started to overtrain in the winter. Also, during the first weeks of summer when the humidity was very high, I had trouble acclimating to the new conditions and my splits dropped about 3 seconds per...

I also enjoy some Velveeta's mac and cheese afterwards. If you eat the entire box you get about 40 grams of protein! Tastes so good..

I have a Clif Bar and Muscle Milk after every workout. It helps your muscles recover quicker if you have something to eat within 30 minutes of your workout rather than eating much later. I am usually on the water for 2 hours a day and do double sessions 2-3 times per week, so I feel that I need the ...

Phase I and Phase II look really strong. As far as Phase III, you should still substitute a few longer rows in those sessions, possibly 2-3 per week. This will prevent from overtraining at the peak of your fitness level.

If you're trying to pull a 2:00 split for an hour at 20 spm and your heart rate reaches anaerobic threshold, but you can pull a 2:00 split at 23 spm and keep your heart rate in an aerobic state, then you should do the piece at 23 spm than at 20 spm. However, if you continue to do the piece at 20 spm...

Running Rowing Combo

I've recently started running 3 times a week. At first I was really sore but now my body has adjusted to it. Is there any evidence of running benefitting your erg strength? I've noticed I can hold a 177 average heart rate for 45 minutes while running, which is about 10 beats faster than I can averag...

that is remarkable... pound for pound, he's probably got one of the best strength-to-weight ratios out there when it comes to long distance.

greg, what are your workouts for building aerobic base?

greg, your aerobic base amazes me. a 6:32 2k, but you pull low 1:50's for an hour, if not below that. i've got a 6:38 and i can barely hold a 1:58 split for an hour, if that. how do you do it?

before i head out to college (mid august) i'm hoping to break 6:25 for a 2k and just work on strengthening my aerobic base.

other than that, getting in some double sessions 3 days a week would be nice.

Men: What do you do?

Rowing shorts/compression shorts are quite aggrevating on the erg/water. To say it bluntly: what do you with your unit? You can't really keep everything hanging down, but pushing everything above the legs isn't comfortable either. You're kind of screwed either way. Does anyone else have this problem...
