Re: heart rate (part 2)
I look at my HR zones from a functional viewpoint and so the question is what is the functional limit or purpose of HRmax? We all know what the aerobic and anaerobic bands do, but surely there must be some other function coming into play to limit HRmax (other than anaerobic energy supply)? If you lo...

Re: Using the Concept2 for building muscle?????????????
I'm pleased to hear JM's experience. I've posted on this before and my experience starting off as a weak seemingly-pregnant male (yeah, not a good look!) was slow loss of +10% weight over a period, coincidentally, of about 9 months on a low damper settings and about 30 minute workouts a few times a ...

Re: Training with a DVT
Trying to put two-and-two together after reading recent posts on UT vs AT/TR training and thinking about blood clots in the process. On a hunch I went looking for connections between lactic acid and blood clots. I know you can find almost anything on the web, and the first link I came across http://...

Balancing Force and Speed
I've yet to master the correct technique after nearly a couple of years - sigh - and I've been thinking lately about the forces applied. I've concluded that technique is not just about the correct sequence of actions but also how the forces are applied. For example, just think simply about the biome...

Re: Has anyone tried an activity tracker with concept 2?
Thanks Lindsay. A useful article. There's not many data points in the figures but for age 60 it looks like 170 bpm is towards the upper end of the range reported. At age 70, 190 bpm is well into the stratosphere, and well outside of observed values. But then again the individual is an elite athlete....

Re: Has anyone tried an activity tracker with concept 2?
I recently bought a Fitbit Charge HR which measure heart rate "continuously", mainly to keep track of heart rate when I'm not exercising with a Polar chest-strap heart monitor. I'm not sure what time interval the Fitbit averages the heart rate readings but it was inaccurate at the start of an exerci...

Re: Training with a DVT
Back on the erg after a bout of prolong cold/cough and travelling. I'm dragging this topic out again as I've just come across an article that suggests strenous exercise may cause DVT in a minority: Upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) Primary UEDVT is a rare disorder (2 per 100 000 persons p...

Re: Dragging out the 16-week plan
I redid my wayward L4 session yesterday but this time trying to stick to a pyramid 2' spm plan of 20:22:24:22:20 for the 10' interval stretch. I didn't think I could get down to 18spm as that seemed quite low. I even had difficulty getting down to 20spm. I tried slowing everything down but the pace ...

Re: Dragging out the 16-week plan
I'm learning the hard way that the W Plan is not as easy as it might seem, particularly the consistency aspect! And, the training is quite long and challenging to boot. I did a Level 4 4x10':r3'20" today (yesterday's piece was a Level 3 - not 4) to see if I could maintain an even pace and not go sil...

Re: Dragging out the 16-week plan
Thanks Greg. I managed to get the Data replaced so it now extends the times by 10 seconds out to 2:10. It was a bit fiddly getting the data from the PDF into Excel via Word but it all works now I think. Did my first Wolverine workout yesterday: an "Easy" Level 4 4x3k:3m'rest. Did the first 3K at 2:0...

Re: Dragging out the 16-week plan
Many thanks for all the advice which I've tried to implement. I've dropped back the drag to about 120 and found that I can now get a faster pace but I'm tending to "fly and die" rather than maintain a good pace consistently. In fact, my pace over 20mins is worse off than at drag=190. I suspect my ti...

Re: Dragging out the 16-week plan
Jim: I have experimented with differing drags and my "optimum" seems to be about 130. I'm gradually increasing the drag to the point where 190 or so seems to be about the hardest level I can tolerate in doing the first half of the RC plan. It's certainly a lot tougher doing the exercises at 190 than...

Dragging out the 16-week plan
I'm half way working through a 16-week rowing company plan and balking at the thought of doing the next stage which takes my heart rate to its max. The fear comes from a heart murmur I have (checked to be benign) and fear of a stroke - the brain damage kind - (there's a family history of these). I'm...

Re: Christmas Recovery
Interesting hjs. The elbows are splayed out and the handle just about shaves the knees at each stroke. The toes seem to curve up - pulling against the straps? I think I would prefer this style as the standard C2 tutorials don't seem to help me improve my times; apart from letting my legs complete mo...

Christmas Recovery
One does have to have a recovery from all that exercise and effort, but the Christmas break and feasting has left me panting and sweating more than usual back on the erg! At times like these the mind wanders to seek the easy way out and so I have revisited the usual technique videos to see if I've m...
