Re: Training with a DVT
Cyclingman1, I am sorry to hear about your DVTs - you sound frustrated and for good reason. Unfortunately, those with effort thrombosis generally don't have warning signs. They often present to the ED emergently with a swollen and often blue arm. I just wanted to clarify what this condition was beca...

Re: Training with a DVT
For clarification, effort thrombosis or Paget-Schroetter Syndrome is not truly what you are thinking it is - while yes, these individuals are usually young and healthy (i.e. athletes) the etiology behind this syndrome is extrinsic compression of the subclavian vein by what is known as the thoracic o...

Allan,
Not to worry - in forums I keep the obscenities in check. In the OR, well, now, that is another matter . . .

Re: back injury advice wanted
Sorry to hear this - I haven't had anything this drastic but I do deal with recurrent sacroiliitis which is annoying. For some reason though, rowing helps make this better. Quite frankly, I think you simply need a tincture of time. Continue therapy and don't even think about rowing. A last resort sh...

Re: Para esophageal Hernial
Jigtime, While what your physician told you is true about the treatment of such hernias, I question the thinking behind the advice to stop rowing. Let me start by saying I, myself, am a vascular surgeon (I had to do general surgery for 5 years prior to specializing). I have repaired esophageal herni...

Re: Training with a DVT
Jim, Yes, clots can lead to permanent damage - a condition known as postthrombotic syndrome. Essentially, your veins have bicuspid valves that hold blood against gravity. Clot tends to affect these valves causing reflux of venous blood down the leg (hence the swelling). In terms of an etiology, cert...

Re: Rowing and Peripheral vascular disease (Now What?)
Roger, Popliteal entrapment syndrome, as you correctly said, is a rare cause of arterial occlusion. Typically, diagnosed in the young (no offense). There are approximately 5 different types, but essentially, it relates to aberrant anatomy that occurs during in-utero development. With that said, some...

Re: Training with a DVT
I am new to this forum but I saw this post. FWIW, I am also a vascular surgeon; as one might imagine, we see a fair number of patients with DVTs. I would encourage you to continue to row. There are DVTs and then there are DVTS. To clear up some misconceptions, anyone is prone to a DVT. There are sev...
