Re: Keeping Type 2 Diabetes in remission in 2025
Thanks for the fast reply, Rider. If you’re happy, then you’re okay. I don’t know the apple fitness system, but keep it up if it works for you. And I understand that some positions are not possible for you, but you wouldn’t want injuries either, I think. As rowing is very repetitive, form is importa...

Re: Keeping Type 2 Diabetes in remission in 2025
Dear Rider, Happy New Year and what a great way to keep the diabetes down! I watched your film and feel you could get much better. I usually try to break a training apart. E.g. a half hour row becomes 3 bits of 10 minutes with a different pace like 20-22-24 or something. Just something new after som...

Re: what should my arm and shoulders be doing on the leg drive?
Hi there, I know I’m a bit late in answering your question, but it might still be useful. Arms and shoulders should not be active, but be relaxed during the recovery and most of the drive. Only at the last part of the drive your arms join in the action. Recovery: 1. Move arms away from stomach, let ...

Re: Where am I supposed to be sore?
Hi to all rowers in this thread with sore arms, Here’s my (rather late) advice. Lots of people do not realise they let their arms join in the fun too soon. Use a side mirror or make a side video while rowing, so you can really observe your movements. Concentrate on this at the catch: - Always sit up...

Re: How close should your bum be to heels on the catch?
I saw this video recently: https://youtu.be/YTKi8i42kAI which tries to debunk the "shins vertical" approach, but I'm not yet convinced. Watched the video, but I can’t understand how this doctor is so concerned about the rower’s lower back, but not his knees. Apparently… Story doesn’t convince me ei...

Re: How close should your bum be to heels on the catch?
To me, the vertical shin thing is about protecting your knees ánd getting better numbers. If my knees pass my ankles at the catch, I don’t have as much power (such as it is). It just fééls active and powerful to drive up with the seat, but my numbers say otherwise… More importantly, I don’t want the...

Re: How to avoid bursitis with rowing?
Sadly I might be looking at many months of recovery with no riding or rowing, I'll get an MRI to confirm but I think the bursitis was a mis-diagnosis. I think the issue is a torn rotator cuff, which may well need surgery :( Bad news, Rob. Cycling just isn’t as much fun as rowing. 😞 (Being Dutch, I ...

Re: How to avoid bursitis with rowing?
Hi Rob, Watched your video and noticed, like James and others, that your body does not look relaxed. It might be the key to your troubles. So here are some of my experiences, hopefully of some use to you, after your shoulder has healed. I’ve always been told that during rowing I shouldn’t use other ...

Hi GirlROWING, Well done losing those 25 pounds. That’s impressive! It’s great you started rowing too. It will certainly make a difference. Re. your question: feet on the floor doesn’t work for me, as my legs are too short. But you might try raising the seat with a couple of extra layers. That way y...

Re: Not getting a full slide to the catch in
Hi Ninja, The big difference between team rowing otw versus the erg: it isn’t about individuals. The rower in seat 8 sets sets stroke rate and length. You just can’t hold on to your own preferences, because that’ll ruin the team effort. Take you cue from the man in front of you, and make sure that c...

Re: Wife doesn't feel any leg benefit
Dear husband and others, It struck me that all that has been said here, is about a third person. She is not part of the conversation, but a film of her is being discussed. 🤔 It makes me feel uncomfortable. Although she doesn’t seem to mind, I still would not like it to be me. Let’s show some empathy...

Hi 50 plussers, Are any of you over 60 and based in the UK? If so....you may be interested in a world record attempt I'm helping to organise in Shrewsbury in October. Hi Rod, How is your challenge coming along? Are enough people willing to get out of the covid lethargy? (Sadly not as easy as I expe...

Re: Plans
Hi Cevan, Good plan to start rowing. It’s easy on the joints and as you lose weight, your strokes will get longer and your numbers better. But boring is not good! It’ll kill your motivation. Look for more variation. I usually check the WOD (workout of the day) for ideas. A favorite is ending every k...

Re: shin angle at the catch
Hello everyone, it's been 6 years since I started rowing, and I know that at the catch my shins should be at 90º with the boat. But I would like to know why. Biomechanically speaking, why is that so important? What happens to muscle contraction or recruitment if we don't reach that angle? It would ...
