Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

After 3 full weeks of not using my Model E, as the weather is so gorgeous here in Sacramento and I was out walking every day, my knees hurt so much from walking I decided to start erging again. Even though my knees still hurt erging it's nothing like when walking. I'm very overweight (263.5 this mor...

Re: Fat Noob needs starting advice

I was following this thread and haven't seen any posts for a while, so my turn I guess. I'm a 400 pounder, bought a model D and started rowing for the first time in the last week of January. Why, kind of a New Year resolution I suppose. My goal, to lose 165 pounds. After the initial soreness and tw...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Yankeerunner, thanks for the encouragement. This morning I woke up to 259.5 - I have not been below 260 for at least six months, this is big news for BIG (but getting smaller) me. So in that frame of mind, now that I was sure I was ready for the Olympics, when I sat down to do 5000 meters 25 minutes ...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Well, I am improving anyway! I just rowed for 30 minutes, covered 4579 meters, s/m was 23, watts=46 (pretty good for me!). And I moved up a few notches from last/next-to-last place in the 30 minute age group (60-69) ranking to 420 from 423. Reminds me of graduating in the bottom 20% of my h.s. class...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Andy and Bob, thank you for your encouragement. I have watched a number of training tapes-particularly the one at the Concept 2 site (I watched it repeatedly when I first started) and I feel like I am doing it right. It took some practice to do the arm thing correctly but I feel like I am doing it r...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Greetings All, I'm Ken, nearing 65 y.o., a newbie and a 70 lb overweight one at that. I got my Model E at the very end of 2012 and starting rowing Jan 1, 2013. I could barely finish 3 minutes when I started. Yesterday, I did two 5000 meter rows (about 36 minutes is what it took for each) and today, ...

Re: polar watch fat burn/fitness

I have a polar watch and chest strap. It tells me I am in the fitness mode when I'm going fairly slowly and not feeling like I'm even getting a moderate workout. When I get to a reasonable speed but can still carry on a conversation it tells me I'm in fitness mode. To stay in fat burn mode I'd have...

Re: Another noob with 50+lbs to lose! Introduction

Hi everyone, I ordered my rower tonight and I'm excited for its arrival. I've been reading the posts in this forum and its very inspiring to hear the success stories and know they started out where I am now. I'm 45, mom to 2 girls, and simply have not taken care of myself. My father passed away jus...

Re: Need to Lose 80 lbs.

Excellent posts all. I'm a newbie to rowing and this forum. I just got my concept 2 model d (just did my first 2k). Last year I ended up losing 80 lbs in about 6 months. I did p90x plus a ton of running. I adhered to the "Warrior Diet" (intermittent fasting)-which I would highly recommend. Unfortun...

Re: avoiding post workout neck and shoulder tension

Sometimes 6-24 hours after longer steady state rows (30 min plus) my neck and shoulders will flare up with some heavy tension. I suspect this is due to the recovery, holding arms out level. I have a tech/desk job which probably contributes due to laptoping stresses. And a travel schedule which prob...

Re: Fat Noob needs starting advice

I am a 405 pound asthmatic and I put my first 1000 meters on the erg tonight. I just want to thank you for posting out here and I encourage you to keep going. Any pace you can bring yourself to sustain for a period of time is a good pace when you are getting started. MrBill A heartfelt congratulati...

Re: So what does rowing @ low rate do for me?

Just did a Moderately intense piece: 30min 16spm 166 heart rate. That is my lowest rate ever. Also did it at one of my lowest drag factors, 110. So while I'm thinking of it I thought I'd ask specifically about the benefits of rowing at low rates and low drag factors. It felt good, but thought I'd s...

Re: Fat Noob needs starting advice

Can you walk properly? Doing so little at such a easy pace will hardly do you any good. Not to be pedant but If I pull with one hand hand only, not my legs and trunk I pull faster easily, I don't believe you are that out of shape. If this does not work now, I think you should start walking and buil...
