Re: Fan to keep cool while rowing
I use the CBreeze and it's quite nice. It directs a flow of air along your right side. Once you are up to speed the airflow is very cooling.

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?
First post in a while. I'm rowing alternate days and running 5-10 miles on other days.
Today's was 1000m warmup then 18x(300m row @ 2k pace, 200m paddle). 5400m work.

Re: rowing "fasted"
I''m far from an expert on the subject, but I have been low-carb for several years. Here's what I have learned, from Volek/Phinney, Drs Attia and Taubes, and others. Ketosis may limit maximum efforts if your glycogen stores are depleted, as the body prefers glucose over ketones when in anerobic stat...

Re: rowing "fasted"
I row and run fasted all of the time. As a low-carb eater, I generally do not look to rely on carbohydrates for energy. I have read a great deal about energy sources during exercise and have found that once your body has adapted to low levels of carbohydrates, it can become conditioned to preferenti...

Re: Training in the heat!
I train outdoors under a roof in Florida. In the summer it gets quite hot. I use a C-Breeze which directs a lot of air back at me. I do notice that the pools of sweat are considerably reduced on my right side (C-Breeze side) compared to left. Now my problem is that it's near freezing in the AM and I...

Re: rowing w/o monitor
My PM4 just crapped out on my Model E. Not sure if it's the pickup assembly or the PM but I get zeroes on the display. I may get a replacement pickup and PM5, not sure. After a brief period of mourning, I set about getting a good workout in whilst rowing blind. I know that at a medium-hard pace I ca...

Re: AN and the Interactive Plan
I found that I had to work my way back into AN intervals. I'd do maybe 45sec to 1min heavy intro before the interval started, otherwise I couldn't get the heart rate up in that interval.

Re: Fat Noob needs starting advice
TGF, your 1k time trial is impressive! As are your improvement in fitness overall. Stick with it and you will go far. Actually you will go nowhere, but that is the fate of indoor rowers! Seriously, once you get accustomed to rowing, you can back off a bit and row for longer on those days when you do...

Re: For diabetes sufferers.....
Carb restriction or elimination will do wonders for you. I was a candidate for T2D having most of the indicators for Metabolic Syndrome: high weight/BMI, high bp, bad lipids, higher bg, etc. Meds did not help much. I had a heart attack in 2009. I went on low carb high fat diet a year ago and lost 50...

Re: Heart Attack hindsight - Warning signs you ignored
Here it is first hand from a Heart Attack Survivor. At the time, I was not a rower, but a runner. I logged 10-20 miles per week, some road, some trail. At 46yo, 5'8" and 199-200#, I was moderately overweight but quite fit CV-wise. At the time, I had some difficulty with a couple of steep hills, but ...

Re: Newbie with observations and sore butt...
I have had the chafing issues as well. I needed a few days off to "heal" then I use Bag Balm liberally before the row begins. I have found that once you get the meters up and you are healed, it doesn't happen so often. Kind of like blisters in new running shoes. Heal and break them in and you are go...

Yesterday: 2k warmup. Then 20 x (250m at 1:41 with 250m recovery paddle)
Today: 2k warmup. Then 10 x (100m paddle, 400m at 1:55ish). Feeling yesterday's workouts in the glutes for sure.

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?
Today I hit a couple of milestones. I finished February with 216k meters in the month, with a week off for injury. I've been rowing 10k-15k/day at UT2-UT1 with some faster bits of 250m thrown in for fun. I had one 1/2 marathon in the mix, which felt much better than the last three. I also broke 1M m...

Re: Training at higher Rates
A favorite workout of mine for this is to warm up for 2k-3k at say 2:10 and then alternate 250m at race rate (30-32) and pace or faster, say 1:42 if I'm aiming for around 7:00. Then recover for 250m, then repeat until 10k is done. That's 14-16 reps, 3500 to 4000m at race pace with almost enough reco...

Re: cutting erg times
I would recommend longer sessions to build aerobic fitness. Work on a solid form, with good engagement of the legs, body and arms. Mix in some short bursts of speed for interest. If you have an erg at home, you have a tremendous advantage over others. Just don't use it to punish yourself - use it to...
