Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
I see it as great for building aerobic fitness after a layoff, general health and recovery efforts. I guess I thought this was the whole point of Maffetone training. I didn't think folks were saying use this to improve your 2K for example, but rather to improve your aerobic foundation. Having done ...

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
Thank you both for your responses. It sounds like I've misinterpreted the objective.
Regarding the warm up, it sounds like if the correct pace/intensity is selected and maintained throughout, the first 15-20 minutes of the piece actually serves as somewhat of a warm up.

Re: Maffetone Heart Rate Training
For those that have done the Maffetone style training, how do you structure effort throughout the piece? For example, my Maffetone max HR is 131, so if I am doing an easy 8K, I try to get my HR to at least 121 by the first split and then hold pace or slow down as needed to keep HR at or below 131. T...

Re: Newbie - Feel "lopsided"; Sweaty hands; Sore butt
This may seem counter intuitive, but I use hand lotion immediately before starting a piece to prevent blisters. I suffered with blisters for a longtime. Tried gloves, tape, weight lifting chalk, etc. and nothing helped. On one occasion I used an erg at a public gym, and it was apparent that the prev...

Re: Sub 6:30 by October. Training advice
I'm no expert, but doing a 10K time trial every week until the end of October sounds like a good way to run yourself into the ground. Maybe we think of time trials in different ways though.

Re: Adding rowing to strenth training and running
Thanks, Gammmmo. Good ideas. So these sessions train power production and sprinting ability? Is there much benefit to 2K training in these or is it mostly meant for training without impacting strength gains? would you cycle out of this type of schedule if training for 2K. Sorry if this hijacks the t...

Gammmmo, would you be willing to post some of the HIIT workouts you do?

Re: Am I "overtrained"?
Good perspective. Thanks, guys.
Did 10 X 200m on 2 minutes rest this AM just to get the body moving fast, and I'll move it up to 500s next.
Appreciate all the good advice.

Re: Am I "overtrained"?
Gammmmo, good food for thought. I was a runner for about 15 years. Not super fast, but had a 10 year stretch where i averaged 40 miles per week, and have run sub 3 hours for marathon four times. So I come from an endurance background, but I started erging in 2016 because of an injury. I don't run an...

Re: Am I "overtrained"?
Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I did a little more looking around and it seems that aside from slower pace at a given heart rate, I don't have many of the typical symptoms of true overtraining so I think it's just a dip as folks have suggested. I'll make sure to stay easy on most days but add ...

Re: Am I "overtrained"?
huh. I hadn't considered the "under-trained" option, but now that you mention it makes sense.
thanks, guys. I'll add some short hard stuff back.
so much to learn about training.

Am I "overtrained"?
Hi Folks, Beginning in November of ’18 through early March this year I did Pete Plan type training, capping off with a 2K time trial, in which I PR’d. During that time I would frequently do 10K rows at 20 spm with heart rate capped at upper limit of UT2, and would usually average around 2:06 to 2:08...

Re: Work out of the day
Dangerscouse, have you always followed a 4 workout per week schedule or is that what you do now that you have a high level of fitness? I've always had a mindset that the more days per week one can do the better (that's how I was as a runner), but perhaps 4 days per week gives a better balance betwee...

Re: Keto
bob01, I followed a ketogenic diet (less than 20 g net carbs per day) for about 6 months in 2015. I had only been erging for a couple of months prior to starting the diet but was relatively fit aerobically from many years of running. I also had been in the the practice of doing long runs (up to 22 m...

Re: Training Volume
I'd like to echo what Gammmmo and mitchel674 have said. I've been interested in finding a balance between gains in strength and gains in erg fitness for a while too. For myself, I learned that one of the two has to go on maintenance mode while I focus on the other. I spent a couple of years getting ...
