Re: Summer Solstice - 21K challenge - strategy?

will feel this tomorrow!!
It is for a good cause!
Regrettable my doc nixed my attempt, thinking "too much exercise" and not good for kidney, which has had modest decline past few years.

Summer Solstice - 21K challenge - strategy?

Hi: I am thinking of attempting 21K challenge this week. Have never done this much; never beyond 14K. Slow-poke by this forum's standards. Curious what strategies other will follow. Thinking of trying this: -First sitting, do 10-12K. -Then return twice during day, 5-6K each time, depending what cond...

hand surgery?

Know carpal tunnel is fairly common problem. I am scheduled to see a hand surgeon for problem in tip of my thumb (wrist synovectomy and or thumb CMC surgery) Want to ask here first if anything specific I should surgeon ask about. Is his experience with indoor rowers relevant? This is my short backgr...

Fingers - tingle when rowing

I've been rowing about 3 years and never had this problem. Within the first 10 minutes, my right hand begins to tingle ('pins & needles' in fingers and palm). As soon as I stop, it stops and no problem rest of day. But when rowing, no amount of changing positions or grip with right hand, or waving a...

Re: Watts versus Calories burned??? Does correlate.

Useful thread. Recently, I started to track my daily mechanical work (Watts * Time), and find this single number especially useful as I tweak drag or pace or other workout variables. For me, this works out to about 180 kJoules (42.9 kCal) - mechanical energy (which I thought far too low till reading...

Re: Dampersettings during workout

General fitness. The basic idea is to pull long strokes, without too much force: length engages the legs, which are already strong, and using them loads the CV system, which gets us fit. ... In both the above cases we use low drag. This makes the stroke quicker so gives us more time to rest before ...

Re: Body Shape?

Ok, here is more intense workout; can do 2-3 times per month : 500 m sprint + 3' min rest, repeat 4 times Total 45' | 7.9 k Breakdown -15:31' | 'warm-up' (intense) | 3k|@2:35.2,95W,24 spm|ratio:4.0 -cycle 1 |500m|@2:17.6,134W,27 spm|ratio 5.0 -cycle 2 |500m|@2:26.8,111W,25 spm|ratio 4.4 -cycle 3 |50...

Re: Body Shape?

hjs and brianh Thanks for thoughts. Brian you've hit on a number of good points I've wondered about: protein, calories, rest between workouts, need to push to improve. (I try to keep records.) I do know this feeling, from more intense workouts (say, repetitive 500m sprints) Get uncomfortable, get sw...

Re: Body Shape?

hi Bob: 3.8, 3.0, and 2.8-3.1 watt-minutes/per stroke .... very low figures for work done per stroke Yes, my energy per stroke ratio (Watts divided by spm) is LOW. Best I can do is 4-5, and I can NOT hold 5 for any length of time. Perhaps I do have structural flaw in my stroke, which might also expl...

Re: Body Shape?

Haha - yes, I am slow. Guess I *assume* sustainable pace, but with longer workouts, would meet my needs. I don't leave a puddle on floor; don't race, but still I am fairly pooped at end. I have tried to emphasize sustainable energy per stroke (quick check: divide Watts by spm), rather than pace or s...
