Re: to run or not to run
The better part of 3 years and I'm still running, all barefoot. That after my orthopod rang the death knell over my future as a runner.

Re: to run or not to run
Well it's been about 2 1/2 years since I started my barefoot running experience. For me, it works. Since I finally got permission to run on my gym's treadmill barefoot, that's how I do it. No Vibram's, no nothing. Strictly barefoot is the way to go, inside or out. Just need to build slowly: SAID = S...

A quote from: http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/endurance-training-for-master-athletes-766 Intensive training keeps age at bay That great news has emerged from several scientific studies, including one completed recently at Ball State University in the United States. In this study, 37 elite runners (i...

fast twitch muscle preservation
I understand that fast twitch muscle fibers tend to diminish faster than slow twitch fiber as we age. I'm going on 55 and am interested in preserving the fast twitch fibers I have. I imagine short sprint rowing intervals with lots of rest in between might be a good way to achieve this. Anyone have a...

Re: Comparing Heart Rates to activites
That I understand. But still, can intense exercise slow the drop in max heart rate as you age, or not?

Re: Comparing Heart Rates to activites
Let's talk max HR and aging. The "old" saw goes: your max HR inevitably drops as you age. I've read articles that support this and articles that claim that hard interval work can slow this decline. Which is true? I work out pretty hard, am going on 55, and have seen 208 on my HR monitor. So what's t...

Re: to run or not to run
Yeah. That would be tough. I run barefoot sometimes on both a rubber and a cinder track, but mostly on fairly decent pavement by my house. Through the winter I had to run on a treadmill in Vibram KSO's. I was surprised to find out how easy it was/is to transition from that to barefoot outside this s...

Re: to run or not to run
hi there. The initiator of this thread back with an update after a long absence. And guess what? I've been running for over a year now....barefoot. Up to about 3 hours a week and intending to increase from that with the long northern minnesota abating.

another update
So, I gave treadmill running a try with my vivo "barefoot" shoes starting last December. Guess what? From the get-go, with these almost-not-there shoes on, my knee ached. That meant no running at all for 3 months or so. With the early spring I resumed barefoot running outside. Have done 8 runs so fa...

update
Here's an update for anyone that might be interested. Just as soon as I started running regularly in my Vivo "barefoot" shoes due to cold weather, I started getting a dull ache in my knee. Something I hadn't experienced at all through almost 3 months of actual barefoot running. This could just be a ...

I'd say you should get into the barefoot running shoe market. I bought some vivo barefoot shoes to get me through our cold Minnesota winters. Doesn't feel as good as barefoot, but I'll put up with it. Still running since my original post, though I took a week off after getting too exuberant on a gol...
