I think this means to row a faster pace (legs faster during the drive AND pull harder) while holding your rating constant.Islesrower wrote:...they say keep the s/min the same but increase intensity.

I'm no expert but I question if this makes sense, or just how it makes sense. Although I do like the analogy of long and short oars.kayakr wrote:...more perceived force, but not necessarily more force...

Thanks, Lee. Based on your 500m time, I'd say you have great potential for improvement. I look forward to following your pb's.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
In the Long Beach Indoor Sprints (Feb 4, 2012) I rowed a pb 2k in 6:34.5 r34.
Since there are only two competitions per year in the southwest USA, my season is about over. So now I'll take a more long-term approach to my training and hope to return next year.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
I pulled 1:39.2 r34 in my first indoor competition (San Diego Indoor Classic). All my splits were about even. I did not fly and die but had no gas left in the tank. I used a drag factor of 135. After my race a few people commented that my rating was high, although they did not suggest that I lower i...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Hi Bob S.
I've never seen Clarence Bass row (I take it that is a good thing). I referenced him just to mention how the idea of erging was planted into my mind. His book that I was reading was about dieting for bodybuilding. His main contribution to the subject was what he called "uniform eating."

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks, gregsmith01748. I recently updated my ranking profile as follows: "In the early 90s I sat on a rowing machine at the gym; that week I rowed two or three times. Later in the 2000s I happened to read a book by bodybuilder Clarence Bass wherein he described the Concept2 competitions and ranking...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
I have been rowing since Nov 7, 2011 and today I made my second attempt at a 1k TT. My time was 3:06.6 r38 drag 135. Next Saturday I have my first competition and am hoping to pull 1:39 without flying and dying.
Also, two days ago I did another pb: 500m in 1:28.4 r44 drag 134.
Age 50.

Re: Drag Pyramids?
I know this thread is dead but I’d like to add, for the record, a couple of things. First, I see now that I was wrong when I thought I was seeing high damper settings for 2k races at the Crash-B in youtube videos. Second, I’d like to share how I have been finding a better drag factor. I have been do...

Bob S. said, In my opinion, you are much too concerned about drag factor. hjs said, This thread is going way to far Fair enough. I have no more questions on the subject. I'll continue to do some experimenting on my own but I won't worry that the drag is the most critical factor in my performance. Th...

Re: Drag Pyramids?
Hi hjs. I realize the 500m is a sprint but as in all sports there is "middle distance" and my question was pondering the extent that one can use high rating in a 2k TT. I understand that the rating would have to be less than a 500m but how much less was what I was intending to ask. And also, What ef...

Re: Drag Pyramids?
NavegationHazard (and anyone else), Re #1, My force curve looks like a left-leaning haystack, so I won't dwell on this for now. Re #2, I basically understand the "tradeoff between grunting harder slower or grunting less hard more often." However, I saw a youtube clip of Rob Smith rowing a 500m recor...

Re: Drag Pyramids?
NavegationHazard, I have read and appreciate your link. Your article makes me curious about how to “beat” the machine. For example, the article says, “net torque = applied torque minus drag torque.” And this makes me wonder how often torque is measured per stroke. In other words, is it preferable to...
