Re: Erging after knee replacement
In 2010 I had a double knee replacement. I knew that they were shot so I did them both before they downgraded our health insurance at work. After about 2 months I was feeling good enough to try to go sculling again. On my first stroke I came halfway up the slide and hit a brick wall, could not get p...

Re: Life jacket
Last November it was a warm day so I went out rowing on the Agawam river in Wareham MA When I came in I noticed that a uniformed officer from Fish and Game was on the shore waiting for me at the take out and when I got in he asked me if I had a PFD (life preserver) I told him no and repeated what ha...

Re: Anyone In Their 70's Rowing
I am 66 and I have been rowing for the last 20 years. I have logged over 1 million meters for the last four years, including the m C2 200k Holiday Challenge. I just got back from a vacation where I was able to row 55k in 6 days. I do not belong to any rowing club and I am not a fast rower. I have gi...

Re: How can I keep my knees together?
I worried about this years ago and tried to strap my knees together, lowered my heels( which did help a little) I am a big guy and I always have been , no obese but I could lose 20 lbs. I had an opportunity to talk to Hank Osborne about this, he is a great coach perhaps the best coach I ever worked ...

Re: Anyone In Their 70's Rowing
I started rowing on the water at age 42, now 64 I am working on my second consecutive million meter year, combined ERG and OTW meters. I think rowing is one of the best ways to combat the effects of aging I can think of but I do agree with some of the other posters Go get some good professional inst...

Re: Dirt on rollers
I have noticed the same thing My solution is I clean my track and rollers every couple of sessions. a rag with mineral spirits works but it is smelly I have been using Armor All the last few years and it seems to work fine I just hold the rag it against the rollers and move the seat with my hands I ...

reducing friction on the slide
when I ERG i dislike having any resistance on the slide. It bothers me when there is that black build up that I see on so many ERG slides and I can't stand that bumpy feeling under my backside as I go up and down the slide. So I have begun to clean and treat the slide in a three step protocol. 1- I ...

Rowing not racing
Is there anyone out there in the rowing community who, like me, is into rowing but not racing? For me the rowing is the thing. Moving a elegant boat through the water in the most efficient way that it is possible for me to do so is my goal not competition. I feel that racing is an external and for me...

Re: Storing a Single at home
First of all I would recommend getting a well made cover for your boat, that would probably protect it pretty well. I use a cover sewn by Burnham Boat. It is a well made, padded cover with Sunbrella on the outside quilting on the inside. I took one to my local sailmaker who told me he could not touc...

OTW splits vs ERG splits
It has been by experience that my ERG split per 500 meters run 20 -25 seconds faster given the same effort. Is that common? I am 61 yo masters male- 225 lbs in pretty good shape. I consistently row 30k per week, ERG and OTW throughout the year. 201k for the Holiday challenge . On the ERG my cruising...

Re: Big feet, foot stretcher, and knee pain
I have big feet and consistly lived with knee pain in fact I am 2 years on from double knee replacement. Yes you can add a seat pad or I actully built some shims and installed them under the seat track to raise my butt. I reacently found that when I increased my angle of my foot strechers I had no m...

Re: Erg Shoes
I heard a Harvard coach say that he has his rowers row only in their socks so that they can "feel the stroke" of the ERG and I assume the boat when they are on the water. Since then I have always gone just with the socks on my ERG and I am fine with that. I go barefoot on the water because I normall...
