Re: Study on correlation of C2 performance to OTW

The erg also gives power output for handle height that might not have an oar in the water. One can watch elite rowers on the water miss 3-4 feet of water per stroke. The erg handle would register power in that motion. They also wash out, rather than have a skilled finish, pulling in to their waist, ...

Re: Can One Increase Maximal Heart Rate With Training?

I have massive heart disease. My first year in recovery from triple bypass surgery, my heart rate was able to climb back to near 160 eventually, with discomfort. But that took almost a full year. A month in, I could barely walk slow. Over the next five years, with daily exercise, my max heart rate c...

Re: Rowing to Regain Myself

To all on this forum, Using a heart rate monitor is REALLY valuable. It gives you a critical safety valve feature to know when you can or should continue, and when not. For best longevity to those pushing their health envelope, as your heart rate slows after a hard interval of any duration, it shoul...

Study on correlation of C2 performance to OTW

Have there been any studies, or individual reports of general correlations of Concept2
erg performance time to actual on the water performance time ?

Re: College Freshman Rower Help!!!

The perils of D1. Only at a small college with small teams are smaller athletes appreciated. Unless you had a written contract, whatever you told the coach and thought you were promised, was only in your head. I seat raced into a 2h4 at a small school. Technique is now a distant 2nd to erg scores in...

Re: Rowing and Lower Back Issues?

This has to do with hip flexor, not low back or disc. I tore my right hip flexor many years ago, and it healed somewhat well, but still nagged at me for 20 years. I finally got the thing much better thanks to a coach at a running shoe store. Testing a pair of shoes, running outside, he noticed I did...

Re: Doubt about training intensity zone.

I was half surprised the post survived review. I used something in my rehab that was discussed in some forums here, and I later saw the subject titled in studies, Graded Exercise Therapy. In forums here, it was initially called cardiac drift. My theory is that the heart maintains pace for the exerci...

Re: What's so bad about AT training?

Pretty simply: The fitter and stronger athletes are, the higher their max HR, and training bands. Just using the Borg scale is very informative, since if a calculated max HR 60 second interval does not come remotely close to exhausting someone, their max HR is a lot higher than they estimate. A supe...

Re: Is the stroke only as good as the worst rower?

If the worst in a boat is bad enough, better to row a 7. BUT a poor rower either will not listen, will not watch others, or is clueless as he/she only watches his oar, and forgets he/she is in a TEAM boat. And the coxswain can see oar work. If the coxswain is not correcting the poor rower, nor the g...

Re: Performance Diet Types and Terminology

To mdpfirrman , nuts and olive oil fats are NOT all unsaturated. There is a blend of fats in all of them. Nut oil blends are all over the map. I researched them years ago and found a single nutrients in nuts page that was very thorough. They have saturated, mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated, fats...

Re: Performance Diet Types and Terminology

In terms of healthy aging, lower calories in general is better. But highly healthy foods are the "neutriceuticals". Pomegranate and green tea stand out. High anti-oxidants foods critically important, as are low fat foods. The combination protects arteries. I had bypass surgery in 2006, and about 3 d...

Re: does weight training and circuit conditioning really hel

Most rowers use different safer postures and body positioning in weight rooms. Thus less benefit to the erg and otw than there might be. One could lift more unsafely to mimic OTW, or try to figure out if you can row more safely according to weightlifting and good body mechanics. My coach, way back w...

Re: small guy rowing

Go for greater power in your stroke. Get a slight lean to bow with a little more open hip angle, and you will get way more power from your glutes. There may be shut downs of this that follow, but I rowed HW in college at 145 lbs, 6 feet tall. Bio mechanical efficiency still gets power to the water. ...

Re: Long Day Rows / Long Steady State Aftereffects

You are welcome. Having been given three years to live in 2006 due to monster heart disease, my demise has been very seriously postponed. Research into highly beneficial foods, and legitimate well researched training and rehab programs, was very important. My cardiologist insisted nothing was going ...
