i have had both a rower and skierg for the past two years or so ... i also stick to strength training and cardio on separate days ... after a warmup and stretch on cardio days i split work equally between rower and skierg ... if i do intervals or pyramids, i move back and forth between each machine...

1:56 in the 5K is a hefty effort. Well done! I suggest trying the following... 6x750m/r1:30 at 1:54 pace. This specific workout really helped me nail down my aerobic capacity for my 1K PB. Model D was delivered last Monday and I've really enjoyed my first week. After my first session (following the beginner Pete Plan so a 5k) my knees were killing me.
