Re: Comparing Rowing to Running

One other thing to consider if you are comparing your running/rowing times is that the record times are for people whose physiology is suited to there sport. Generally speaking world middle or long distance runners tend to be long and lanky, getting skinnier as the distance increases. World class ro...

Re: Rowing to loose weight

This is honest feedback, so please take it that way. 5K in 30 minutes is slow. Very slow. Really too slow to give you any kind of a workout. You don't give any details on your age/height/weight, but when I started rowing three-ish years ago I was 45 and two weeks into my rowing I was at 23:00 for 5K...

Re: Ivy/University rowing?

what would you recommend I do then? Seems like there is no easy way out... Correct, there is no easy way out. If your goal is to get your 2K time as low as possible over the summer, then you need to pick a target time and train towards that. You said that you think 6:15 may not be achievable for yo...

Re: Model C vs. Model D

I voted yes. - A used D is likely to be in better condition than a C since it is most probably quite a bit newer - The handle on the D is better. - If you can find a D with a PM4 the HRM support is better (Garmin ANT) On the PM4 front, my model D (used) came with a PM3 and I upgraded to the PM4 to g...

Re: Dropping heavyweight-is it possible?

You don't say which "season" you are referring to.

Unless you are fat, dropping 30lbs at your age/height is going to be tough to do.

Re: BPM statistic

bpm?

Do you mean heart rate? Unfortunately the online logbook does not store heart rate information. If you export your workout data to an Excel spreadsheet on your computer the heart rate info is available there since it is stored on the log card.

Re: 2K time for weight!

Height makes a difference because taller people are able to generate longer strokes so it is easier for them to generate more power at a lower stroke rate.

Young folks are supposed to be in better shape.

Re: Newbie looking for tips / advice

As the others have mentioned, you need to build power. Intervals are a good way to do this. Depending on your pain and suffering threshold, go for either 500m intervals with a rest period 3-4 minutes or something a little shorter, say 1 min active followed by 2-3 minutes rest. For the work pieces, t...

Re: Row in one fluid motion

A video of your technique would help to diagnose the problem. If you read the description below the double-diamond force curve is sounds like your timing is off. You need to apply steady force for as long as possible in the stroke. You don't mention what stroke rate you are using, but it would be a ...

Re: Returning to erging after 15 years

My two cents on the subject. Both erging and cycling are great ways to build cardiovascular capacity, which is needed in both, so going from one to the other you will certainly have a good starting point. Where it starts to diverge is that there is a certain degree of muscle specificity for each act...

Re: 0 meters left, and projected finish and "split/500m"

For projected finish: do you mean it's the current split over distance remaining? (not AVERAGE split) It is definitely current pace over remaining distance. You can see this quite clearly if your pace changes by a significant amount. Current pace is the top reading, depending on how you have the di...

Re: Buy local vs Concept2 site vs Amazon

The only reason why I wouldn't get it from Amazon is if I would need the in-home warranty. Amazon.ca does have the PM4 but it costs an extra $155. I'd spend the extra $$$ on the PM4 over the in home warranty. I assume that it covers pick-up/return if there is an issue but in reality it's just store...

Re: Buy local vs Concept2 site vs Amazon

Seems like a no-brainer to get it from Amazon. The rower itself is simple to assemble and once assembled is virtually indestructable.

If Amazon has the PM4 as an option I would consider getting that since I believe it also comes with the Garmin heart rate monitor.

Well, you got the first step right by joining the forum. Welcome. 1. If google can't find an actual rowing club near you, then nobody can. Check for local cross-fit centers or other gyms that have rowing machines. They may have something. 2. Lots of information on the forum here, on the Concept 2 si...

Re: What constitues an elite time?

What do people reckon constititutes an elite time/performance for a particular 'standard' distance? I would consider "elite" in any sports based event to be somebody who is competitive at the world level. That is probably less than 1% of people who are serious in a given sport. For smaller sample s...
