Re: My Quest for a 6:40 (or lower) 2k

Don't fly and die... lots of people start out at several seconds below their target split, and have completely drained the tanks by the time they get to the second thousand. If you're shooting for a 6:40 (and think you can get it) try to hold a 1:37.5-1:38 the entire way through (doing the first 10...

Disagree. Some lightweight guys post pretty fast times at the Schuylkill Navy Run on a pretty difficult 10k course, as far as running courses go. (31:25 winning time this year).

Re: Think I may be severely overtrained, anyone have experie

When you say 'getting significantly slower', do you mean relative to your huge PR or relative to the range you'd previously performed in? Do you keep a training log? Have you examined what you were doing leading up to the 2k, and then afterward? Have you altered the pace of your aerobic workouts at ...

US "not one of the top rowing nations"? Are you kidding me? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowing_at_the_Summer_Olympics#Medal_table Come on Nav, don't try and muddy the waters. Your only as good as your last row. The mens program didn't even pick up a medal at the last Worlds in Bled, Slovenia. Refe...

Re: Drag Pyramids?

I think there can be some value to changing the erg drag during an interval piece. I'd imagine that muscle firing speed at low drag is significantly elevated compared to a very high drag. At a high drag, I'd guess that fiber recruitment would be higher. Both are desirable outcomes of sprint training...

Re: New User Experience

My guess is that your body isn't used to stopping all of your inertia at the finish of the stroke. Try some leg raises (both hanging from a pull up bar, and laying on a bench) to build the strength there. Also, I'd guess that you might be heaving your body into the finish of the stroke too much. Do ...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Armando,
I'd be curious if you'd share some insight into the ergs that comprised your ACRA winning four? I know the erg scores of one of the ACRA grand final boats that you bested, so I'm curious to compare.

Re: Tabata Results Thread

I'm not sure if you have tried these or not, but why not try them and tell us if you still think you weren't going all out. Your 2k time shows a minimum of 392w for your power at VO2max. That makes 170% for you 666.4w. See how many 20" intervals you can get over 666 with only 10" rest. I think you ...

Re: Tabata Results Thread

I guess my point might have been based on an incorrect assumption. No rowers can hit 2000 watts on the erg, that I know of, while many top sprinters can (at the end of 200km races). I maybe mistakenly assumed that in rowing, vo2 wattage is a higher percentage of 'all out' wattage than it is in cycli...

Re: Tabata Results Thread

Well, they are two different sports - I wouldn't suggest you read too much into the 170% of vo2 max because top sprinting cyclists can sprint at close to 2000 watts (think low pull) while top vo2 wattages are probably around 600 watts. That's 300+ percent higher - which is quite a ways away from 170...

Re: Tabata Results Thread

I keep seeing people say that a huge wattage drop off (aka blowing up) was the intent of the protocol, whereas on cycling forums I read they emphasize that athletes were told in the study to maintain a certain wattage (170% of vo2 max) and if the dropped below it, they were done for the day. Someone...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Did a 2k on Sunday. 6:38.7 at 31 spm.
Splits were 1:39.9, 1:40.3, 1:40.1, 1:37.5

Haven't really done much in that speed realm yet - so hoping to be at or under 6:25 by the summer club racing season.

Jason Read, Luke Agini, Andrew Brennan, Conal Groom, Kevin Light, Elliot Hovey, Tom Graves, all rowers in the 6 foot range have done at/around/under 6.

Re: Tabata Results Thread

Wow, not bad. My best, average for all 8, is just under 1:35. I am rowing at 75 drag factor, unfortunately, because my gym does not maintain their ergs. But my 2k score is currently in your vicinity. My guess would be that you're good for quicker than a 6:38 right now.
