Re: Looking to pull the trigger, some questions...
Regarding noise - we keep our rower in the basement, and it never bothers the kids or my wife on the first floor. It seems a little loud while you're on it, but from even a few feet away it's not obnoxious or anything.

Re: Ranger's training thread
I've been away from this thread for ~300 pages ... has ranger posted any of the promised screenshots of his PM4 after one of his 10k/hm rows? Or is he on to a new program?

Re: Need to gain weight
If you cannot gain weight, eat more. Unless you have a serious digestive disorder, you'll eventually start gaining weight if you keep cranking up your calories.

Re: A Project Management Approach to Lightweight Rowing
Squats: 320-360 lbs max Pull-ups: 35If you can achieve each of these goals then you are pretty muchguaranteed to have a sub-6:20 2k. Heck, why row at all then? I should just be focusing on squats and pull-ups until I hit those #s, then start doing some rowing once I have the strength. BTW - is squa...

Re: Shortest rower to pull sub-6 on erg?
My old pair partner may have been 6'1" on a good day (my girlfriend at the time was significantly taller than him) and pulled a 5:52 at mid to low 80 kg. He was an utter freak though. Too bad genetics plays a part in all of this and that there isn't a training program titled 'how to be a freak of n...

Re: Ranger's training thread
Fallacy of the single force curve I am not posting single force curves. My force curves all look the same, as my videos illustrate. Did you post a longer video? The only videos I've seen were either very short (10 strokes or so), or showed a few strokes that looked like your posted pics, followed b...

Re: Short Interval Workouts
My rate limited workouts haven't been terribly scientific ... basically 'sprints' at relatively low rates. For example, last night I did the following: * 1000 warmup * 6x12 pulls @ ~14spm, as hard as possible, with slow recovery for a couple minutes between rows. * 1000 cooldown Each repeat was betw...

Re: Ranger's training thread
You are a 7:02 erger until you show us otherwise. No, in the past, as a 50s lwt, I am 6:28 erger, rowing badly (10 SPI) at max drag (200+ drag factor). Among 50s lwts, historically, that makes me the third best in the sport, off the pace by three seconds, but better than any 50s lwt can row at the ...

Re: Short Interval Workouts
LincolnB - good insights. After a few months of pounding out the meters (~80k per week), I realized that I was just getting slower at the shorter distances ... for example, my 500 went from a 1:29 to a 1:33. Considering I just started rowing a few months ago, this was rather discouraging, so I start...

Re: Ranger's training thread
If you raise the drag and slow your legs down, you cut your ratio. It looks as though I now row in something close to triple the ratio of Roy and Mike. If you pull 9 SPI at 120 df. like MIke and Roy, you are in a 3-to-1 ratio at 20 spm. If you pull 12 SPI at 95 df., you are in 3-to-1 ratio at 30 sp...

Re: Ranger's training thread
BTW, a poetic foot is .4 seconds long. So, a 3-to-1 ratio is tetrameter, with drives at the beginning of each line. Almost all of Emily Dickinson and Andrew Marvell is in tetrameter. Quite a bit of Frost. All folk verse--limericks, nursery rhymes, proverbs, ballads, hymns, anthems, Dr. Seuss, etc. ...

Re: Ranger's training thread
I am _much_ better than that now. I now row well (13 SPI) at low drag (108 df.). ranger Yes, we've heard that several thousand times. Over 9000 and counting to be exact. It would be interesting to have one screenshot of 2+ strokes mixed in every 10,000 posts or so. Didn't you promise a video this m...

Re: How not to get bored whilst on a rowing machine?
I have often agreed with your comments about static vs dynamic ergs, but this one goes too far. Any goddamned exercise machine gets boring in the long run, especially if you compare working out on a rowing machine to real rowing out on the water. Bob S. Even discounting the hyperbole, I don't under...

Re: Low max HR compared to running?
Lately I've been doing some faster pieces on the erg, and have noticed that I cannot get my HR anywhere close to when I ran. For example, my last run in October I ran 5k at a moderate pace and my HR stayed around 165, and during sprints it hits 185-190. On the erg, when I'm really pushing myself my...
