Re: What Training Have You Done Today?
6 x 250 with 2 minute rest. This was really hard. Started out around a 1:20 pace for the first interval. I had planned to do 8 or 10 intervals, and have a shorter rest between intervals, but I was dead by 6. 5k very slow row after. Abs, calves, forearms and stretching after that. It is funny how one...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?
Still working on the Pete Plan. Did my first 4 x 2000m workout today. First three went well. Kept it around 1:53 pace. The fourth when I was supposed to pull my hardest went rapidly south. Not only did I not go under 1:53, but I barely kept it under 1:57 when I fell apart at the 1k mark and just abo...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks Bob,
No I have not tried the pad. I was just hoping my butt would toughen up as I rowed more. This does not seem to be happening. I guess I will try to use some old foam padding, and failing that I will get the C2 pad.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Following the Pete Plan. I rowed my first continuous 10000m today. Time was 39:52. I am very happy with this, since I could have pushed harder. I kept my heart rate under 145 the whole time. The biggest problem is that my butt hurts quite a bit as I row longer, and I am losing weight and hence paddi...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?
2000 metre warmup The first time I have done the Pete Plan pyramid day. Despite the warning about going off too fast on the 250 and 500 I ran them through in the low 1:30 range. Paid for it on the 750 and 1000m, but still kept it around 2k Pb rate of 1:45. I did not have a lot left for the last 500 ...

Re: Lifting vs. Lots of Rowing for 500 times
That is good advice Nav. I found that time trialing the 500m was not near as grueling as the the longer pulls, and I think there is nothing like pulling a distance to get an understand your pacing and ability. Also, thanks for the start info. I have come to realize that a good start is integral. I a...

Re: Lifting vs. Lots of Rowing for 500 times
Hi Leo, I would think that your response would have to be taken as a very educated, nearly definitive answer. Your record is certainly an amazing accomplishment. My goal for next year is to get under 1:20 for 500m. I have slowly attempting to increase the time that I can pull my maximum which is rou...

Re: Enduring pain or improving cardio?
hjs - I agree that an ability to endure pain is part of a person's makeup, but I think it can also be developed. I think the fact that I am just beginning to row is exposing me to a different type of pain than I am used to, and it is taking me some time to get used to it. Rowing hard, day after day,...

Re: Lifting vs. Lots of Rowing for 500 times
Hey Dickie, I think we are much closer to believing the same thing than you realize. There is some cross training benefit to weights, but to be good at rowing you have to row. Powerlifting is probably much less useful for rowing than Olympic lifting or speed circuit training. You get good at what yo...

Re: Lifting vs. Lots of Rowing for 500 times
I agree strength through weight lifting has a value in rowing. I have only been rowing for about three months. For the last few years I have done very little cardio, and almost exclusively lifted heavy weights. My times up to 300 metres (45 sec) reflect my strength, but I think even my longer rows a...

Re: Concept2 technique video--Is that right?
I do not lean that far back or bring my hands up like that, but my technique is so obviously a work in progress that I probably am the one doing it all wrong. I can honestly say that a video tape of me rowing would show a much more flawed stroke than anything you see in her rowing.

Enduring pain or improving cardio?
It has become clear to me as I have progressed over the last months that improvement in rowing times obviously reflects the rower's cardiovascular improvement, but also a large component of improvement is the mental ability to push through the pain and set a personal best. Some days I can just tough...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?
2k warmup, 5 x 1500 as per the Pete Plan. Good pace kept it easy right around 5k pace of 1:54. Followed this up with abs and stretching. This program is really great. I would recommend it to anyone that is starting out. I sort of floundered around for my first couple of months and only progressed be...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?
Finished my first week on the Pete Plan, and heavy weights on Sunday. I know it is not rowing, but my weights are going up like crazy. Squats - 3 sets 335 x 6 Deadlifts - 3 sets 405 x 6 That's only about 170 lbs. off what I was lifting 12 years ago when I was my strongest. I am not going to try to a...
