Re: 2k sub 6
If you put LeBron James on an erg right now, quickly showed him the basics of erging, and let him do a 2k, I doubt he would go faster than 6:45 or so, which weight adjusted wouldn't be that good whatsoever. Even if he did go faster for his weight he'd have to pull a 5:40 or so to be any good. To be...

Re: Weight training and ergometer performance
It would be negligent of me not to post this youtube video:
Rowing starts at 4:53. He pulls a 1:18 500 after doing sets of deadlift at 800lbs! I fully realize that this guy would probably sink any boat OTW.

Re: Weight training and ergometer performance
... Your erg times and mine are very similar. And, I was a collegiate swimmer before ... now a rower. And, I'm 6'4" ~202 lbs. How long have you been rowing/erging? Cool man! I swam for a year in college and began rowing sophomore year, fall 2007. What events did you swim? Are you rowing in college?

Re: Weight training and ergometer performance
I have personally found weight training and strength to be extremely beneficial to 2k performance. When I started rowing three years ago, I had hardly ever touched a barbell before. When I began training squats, deadlifts, and power cleans I noticed an immediate increase in power. In the first 3 mon...

Today, we had a boathouse-wide 2k erg-off. This is one of my last 2ks before I graduate, so I was really pumped. I wanted to go somewhere around 6:18. I was at 1:34.9 pace with 500 to go and managed to pull 1:32.3 for the last 500 to get a 6:16.9. Woot. I also finally achieved my lifetime goal of ha...

Haven't posted here in a while, but I've been consistently training. In the fall, I dropped my 6k down to a 20:57 (1:44.8) from a 1:45.8 split last year while focusing more on strength training then endurance . Additionally, I just low pulled a 1:12, down from a 1:15 (and yes, I recognize that low p...

Any swimmers out there?
If so, what events do you/ did you do? I was a 200 freestyler and butterflyer and still get in the pool every once and a while.

I was tempted to say Michael Phelps, but he has short legs relative to his height and swimming in general doesn't require very strong legs (it is about 70% upper body, the opposite of rowing). All the things you mention as disadvantages, I feel are great advantages for rowing. My pick is Michael Ph...

If I had to pick any single athlete for the erg (where being very large isn't neccesarily much of a disadvantage), I might actually pick one of the heavier UFC fighters. They are massively strong and need great endurance to get through fights. I was tempted to say Michael Phelps, but he has short le...

If you selected 8 guys from any sport and trained them for a year, which sport would win in an OTW competition? Which athlete out of all of them would have the fastest 2k? This is my speculation, please share yours: Swimmers win, because of similar build/endurance compared to heavyweight rowers. Mic...
