Re: Erg wattage vs Cycling wattage
What Nosmo said... there are going to be huge differences between the two. Here are my numbers for my best 30 minute efforts in rowing v cycling. Rowing - 309 watts (70 kg) - 5 years ago Cycling - 382 watts (68 kg) - 1 week ago When I did the effort on the erg I was in very good shape so maybe I cou...

Re: Ranger's training thread
Wanted to check in on the pre-CRASH-B activity, and WOW, Rich has really gone on a tear! Rich, I just want to thank you... I've sent this thread to a bunch of my former OTW teammates and you've become a legend well outside the indoor rowing world. Remember, history is written by the victors, and thi...

Re: Ranger's training thread
Mike, you guys that push yourselves as masters rowers impress the hell out of me... training in a relatively distraction free environment was a luxury! Add job, family, life, etc to that... it's why I still have some measure of respect for Rich. My father is masters rower in his mid 60s and still ge...

Re: Ranger's training thread
Rich, here is my question. Once upon a time (actually not that long ago) I could hold 1:35 for 2k, averaging about 31 for rating, at 150 lbs (13 spi by your calculations). This was after training for about 6 months after taking four months off following the conclusion of my collegiate rowing career....

Re: Ranger's training thread
LL - I definitely see your point, and it's a good one. My aversion to this thread has nothing to do my own feelings toward it and I could indeed ignore it (and I usually do). My negativity toward the past 600+ pages of crap instead centers on the fact that even if I choose to ignore it, I firmly bel...

Re: Ranger's training thread
Does anyone else think this thread should be locked now and Rich banned? I mean it was entertaining and an exercise in how not to train while he was actually racing... but now that he's not I'm afraid it serves no utility. For a Concept2 sponsored forum I think the level of discourse needs to be ele...

Re: Ranger's training thread
Rich, Please cite, specifically, what evidence you have to support this assertion: "Because of the culture that surrounds the sport (the major training plans, clubs, collegiate teams, national teams, winter erg races, etc.), almost no one takes the time to learn to row well at low drag." I'm very in...

Re: Training levels
Very good info here. One suggestion that might make identifying zones a little easier... take whatever your threshold pace is (say your PB pace for 10k), convert to watts, and then calculate your zones from that. The numbers are a little cleaner and because the erg gives you watts they're just as ea...

Re: Does cycling power transfer to erg power
For what it's worth...
FTP on the bike - ~360w
FTP on the erg (for the hour) - ~230w
This would be in a well-trained state on the bike, and with almost no time on the erg.

Re: Does cycling power transfer to erg power
Hey markman, I just saw this thread after posting in the thread about trainingpeaks, wattage, and cycling. I've got a background in both and here are some of my 'quantitative' observations. The wattage on the bike, as folks note above, is going to be much, much higher than on the erg. To give you so...

Re: Training Peaks, wattage, etc
Thanks, I was very fortunate to row for a good EARC team. I'll definitely see major fluctuations in power as I'm riding, but provided that I'm pedaling consistently the normalized power (the power that represents the best estimate of the physiological cost of the effort) and average power work out t...

Re: Training Peaks, wattage, etc
Nosmo, thanks for the link to the description of how power is measured on the erg... interesting stuff! The mechanical efficiency of the bike definitely something I've thought about relative to the erg and is a good point. Probably the most important difference is the relative torque you have to gen...

Re: Training Peaks, wattage, etc
Glad I was following this thread, I thought no one would reply! What I did was derive my FTP in watts as close as I could and then just plugged in intensity factors depending on what the percentage of FTP was for a workout. So... if my FTP (for an hour) was 300w, and I did a workout at an average of...

Training Peaks, wattage, etc
Hey folks - I wanted to poll the wisdom of the crowds out there and see if anyone has had any experience utilizing TrainingPeaks for training on the erg? I know this program is a little analytical, but it has gained so much traction in the cycling world (both with pros and amateurs) I was surprised ...
