Biking!!!!!

I agree with Paul- if/when I stop rowing, I will definitely pick up biking.

Stationary upright bikes are great- crank up the resistance and go for a minimum of 80-90 minutes.

I've found that a 80 min SS erg is about equivalent to a 120 min bike.

I would say more than 3-4 seconds. Not only was your body not physically prepared, but you were also not mentally prepared. It sounds like you were feeling rushed and flustered-- you were mentally weaker. And pushing through the pain is what a 2k is all about .

Active recovery all the way! I find it to be very relaxing. I always erg or bike on my off day.

On the erg, I do 2k split+35 for 60 minutes at SR 16-18. I do not let my HR go above 140, usually I like it keep it around 130-135.

abs/core to help with rowing

Any ideas for specific abs work to improve my rowing and erging? I searched the forums, no luck. Right now, I do 20 min of abs work 2-3 times a week. This mostly consists of front plank, side plank, push ups, bicycles, regular crunches, supermans on the PB, PB leg lifts, and back extensions. I would...

Good rowers have to be (at least a little) sadistic!

How else could you get through a 2k test/race? Or do 15x1min pieces? Or row a HM?

You need to have the mental ability to force your body to do something that it does not want to do.
